Yesterday I received a PM from a member regarding the taper fit of the trans coupling to the shaft on A.R.E. shaft he was installing. He had detected a slight misfit and did call Elberts. They acknowledged the issue and are sending him a couple more couplings to try. Way back when I installed my first double taper and being very conscious about proper taper fits, I did blue the fit and found it to be off slightly. I did post my findings at that time and did suggest lapping the fit. I'm suggesting doing the same for anyone installing the shaft system. I'm a firm believer in the double taper, by no means saying it's a bad system and feel the Elberts is quality. It's just that with any machining even with CNC machining, taper fits can be off. The length of the taper at the trans coupling is short so the fit is critical so if anyone is installing one, I suggest lapping. (don't forget the prop taper too! )
