1994 SNOB.

I decided to pull the fuel tank and get to work on some deferred maintenance items. I really need to replace the fuel sending unit and re-pack the rudder shaft.

The current sending unit is built by Rochester and looks like this:


The pivot arm and float have broken away from the body of the sending unit.

I've been thinking about upgrading and replacing the pivot arm type sending unit with one of these:


This is a "reed" type unit. Based on the manufacturer's description, this has the 5 hole SAE bolt pattern and has 240 to 30 ohm output. I don't know for sure if that is the same output that my current Rochester unit has. Can someone confirm that this new unit would talk to my existing fuel gauge? My tank is 11 inches deep and this unit is 9 1/2 inches. From what I've read, these types of senders should be 1 inch shorter than tank depth. The reed type units are more expensive and run between $50 and $80.

If I wanted to save a few pennies, I could just go with a generic Moeller pivot arm unit:

I've replaced one of the wire and float types with the reed switch type.

They both have the same range of resistance 33 to 240 ohms., so they talk to the meter in the same language. I think it's English with a bit of a midwestern twang to it.

33 ohms is FULL and 240 ohms is empty. That's an industry standard these days for fuel sending units.

It's been dependable and at least for me seems no better or worse than the other style for accuracy, but easier to install

Just finished up installing a new reed style sending unit and re-mounting the fuel tank. I hope I never have to pull the fuel tank again...

While the fuel tank was out, I re-packed the rudder shaft seal.

One interesting thing with the reed style unit. All the experts say to get the unit that is one inch shorter than tank depth. My tank is 11" deep, so I got the 10" sending unit. Since the tank was totally empty, I had the opportunity to fill the tank and watch the fuel gauge. With the fuel gauge energized, I put 5 gallons into the tank. The needle did not move from "Empty". At 8 gallons, the needle finally started to move. At 15 gallons, the gauge showed 1/2 full. At 25 gallons, the gauge showed "Full". Looks like I'll have an 8 gallon safety margin when the gauge shows empty.

All ready for Lake Powell later this week.
