I have a freshly rebuilt PCM 454 from a project Barefoot Nautique. As it sits currently, it needs final assembly (intake and accessories). My plan was to finish it off, paint it, and have a nice backup motor ready to go. The more I think about it, the more I'd rather warm it up a bit- but I just cannot bring myself to disassemble a freshly rebuilt engine.
So, I am thinking it would be better to find it a new home. Lots of options on the way it can be sold- short block, long block, or bobtail. I would like a core 454 block/engine in exchange so I can build my own as I please. I can assist in warming this engine up slightly with a few top end changes, if desired... I am pretty well stocked on BBC parts currently. I have a head/intake combo in mind that should be good for 375-400hp.

Thanks!

I will be putting some effort into finishing this engine very shortly... It will be finished off in stock 330hp form and painted PCM silver. If an interested party wanted it as-is, disassembled to the long or short block, or would like it finished differently, please let me know ASAP!
Please email for pictures and info.

Would you accept a 72 Lynn Green Mustang Hull, currently covered with paint in trade for payment for the engine? I have access to one, but she will need a little TLC.
Curious,
Donald

Donald, I might consider it... But the hull needs to be in one piece. I fear the one you have in mind has been reduced to fiberglass dust...

Will you trade for a stand up jet ski? Needs minor fiberglass repair.

Tim, do you have any idea what the HP limit would be running a 454 with wet log through transom exhaust? My jet boat has a tired 454 (though still runs very well) and because it has a motorbox with jump seats on either side I don't think I have room for any sort of aftermarket exhaust. I don't know what my engine was rated at, but going off of an impeller chart it appears to make 330-350 HP now.
I've thought about a rebuild but don't want to pay someone to build a 450 HP engine that is choked by exhaust and can't make it's power.

If there is a limit, it's gotta be well over 1000hp.
There are several factory engines, such as the Pythons (435hp), 6.0L (409-450hp), and SC6.2 (550hp) that are near or exceeding your hp target... Most breathe through cast iron manifolds. Several of us are running 500+ hp through aftermarket stainless or aluminum manifolds. What we're building is still pretty tame compared to many offshore guys... They mostly run wet exhaust too. Of course, aftermarket manifolds aren't cheap. That said, build on.

Really, very interesting. I guess from reading on some jet boat sites I just assumed the logs would limit HP, I know there are comments about reaming out some inside flange edges to maximize flow where the logs attach to the snails. That's really promising to hear you don't think it would be much of a limiting factor. Even though like I said I don't believe they'd fit, I looked at the cost of jacketed headers, and I think they are worth more than my whole boat.
The unfortunate thing is I think I would have been a good prospect for your engine if it was built to put out a bit more power, mid 400's to 500 is kind of what I've had in mind, plus I'd have the donor engine to swap. It's a 60 mph boat now, very stable, and I figure adding a bit over 100 HP would get it to high 60's and be a better match for the hull size/weight in terms of holeshot and mid range. I don't think 375-400 HP would be enough of a difference to be worth it.

Missed the key word- log. I thought you were strictly talking wet vs dry exhaust. The logs are almost certainly a restriction vs a riser/header style exhaust. I wouldn't worry *too* much about it in the 400hp range though.

Well that makes more sense, I was thinking I was nuts! I do value your experience and knowledge so was all ears. Good to hear you feel I could absorb a power bump, just maybe not as far as I would have liked. I can't say I've spent the time to do precise measurements to see if a non-log exhaust would fit, and could always modify the motorbox, but the little narrow jump seats are handy and wouldn't work if squeezed more by the box dimensions swelling. From my eyeball test I don't think there is room.
