Subject: Question about buying a boat.
Date Posted: September-20-2016 at 11:20am
Hello everyone,
Im a newbie here,
I will be in the market for Correct craft in the next 12 months,I would like an 80's model.
My friend built one by hand out my mahogany 30 years ago using 2 foot knuckles took him 5 years this boat was stunning he called it a Keith Craft.
I have been hooked on it since.
My question is what is the best year and why?
I will be willing to pay from 10,000 to 25k for the right boat.
I want an original boat also.

Thanks
Ray

You pretty much have the pick of the litter with that budget. Start thumbing through the brochures in the reference section, there many models produced in the 80s.

Well with a budget like that you can buy 3 or 4 boats from the 1980's if you shop around. Buy now before winter and you'll find deep discounts. Spring time prices are at their peak. You won't find a mahogany boat from the 1980's however. Since 1970's even 1960's correct craft used fiberglass. You may be looking for a Chris craft and not a correct craft. Do some research under the reference section on this website and you will find digital brochures for just about every year/ model boat made. Good luck in your hunt.

There are tons of threads on here related to different hull designs and their effect on wake pattern.....I agree with the above, with your budget, you should have zero problems finding the perfect boat

What are you going to use the boat for? Slalom, footing, wakeboard, etc?

Ray, welcome to CCFan! As mentioned above your budget will get you into a wide range of boats.

The 80's were great for Correct Craft, any specific model you're looking for in the 80's? Determining the "best" boat from the 80's is difficult as they're all unique in their own way. Give us some idea of how you want the boat to perform and we can point you in the right direction.

Lastly, where are you planning to use the boat? Looks like you're close to the coast so big water and salt can be a concern if the boat isn't setup and cared for properly.

The best correctcraft from the 80s would be my 83... and 25k would just about buy it... sadly its not very original...

Seriously though, check out a brochure in the reference section pick a model and a color and share it here - low hour original beauties are still being found in garages every day.

Ray,
You wanting a wood boat was my first impression. Could you clarify?

Welcome to CCfan. If you do want a Correct Craft, stick with us and I'm sure we can help.

He said he wanted an 80s CC, the story about the wood boat was just that, a story.

I've identified 9 unique hulls from the 80s.

Hulls built off of one or another Ski Nautique design.

16' Ski Tique 80-81 which received a slight hull modification and was renamed Mustang for 82-83

18' Ski Nautique 80-81 also received a slight hull modification and was renamed Ski Tique 82-84

17' Bass Nautique 84-85. [outboard fishing boat, total outlier]

19' Ski Nautique "2001" 82-89

V-Hull type boats below handle rough water well, not nearly as nimble as the above hulls based off the Ski Nautique design.

20' Southwind Bow Rider (80-84) was cut down from the rub rail, thus shortening it's overall length to 19' due to less nose, making it:
Martinique 80-84
Southwind 82-83
Barefoot Nautique 80-89
Dominique 87-88
Riviera 82-83 (v-drive)

20' Martinique, all new hull had a few forms:
Bow Rider 86-79
Riviera 87 (cuddy cabin)
Cuddy 88 (renamed 87 Riviera)
Closed Bow 88-89

Besides the Fish Nautique these boats are pretty rare. The years made are my closest guess as the brochures of the mid 80s are not as comprehensive.

23' Fish Nautique 80-89
23' Sea Nautique 81-83 (enclosed cockpit)
23' Sea Nautique 84-85 (large cuddy cabin)
23' Cuddy Nautique 80-86 (small cuddy cabin)

24' San Juan Runabout 80-82
24' San Juan Fly-Bridge 80-82

27' Fishing Cuddy

two foot knuckles are when the wood is routed and joined together with glue, making the wood appear as one solid piece. when completed hull is sanded and cleared and sanded many times with 2500 grit and then polished.

Ray,
The term is a new one for myself as well and I feel I'm very versed with wood boats. Maybe there's a misunderstanding with the term?

Two foot knuckle is when you kick them in the head twice before the knockout punch

Then I'd recommend looking at the Ski Nautique 2001. It's makes a great wake boarding wake, Comparable to even the specialized wake boat of the late 90's and early 2000's. These boats were very popular and there are plenty of them available. Personally it's my favorite boat, I love the style and name. The 2001's generally go for between 4k to 10k for boats that run. 8k should get you a really nice one, particularly at this time of year.

Is there a particular reason why you want a boat from the 80's? With your budget you could shop for pretty much any model from the 90's and most of the models from the early 2000s.

If you are looking at broadening you search to newer boats I'd consider any of these too.

- Sport Nautiques (93 t0 97)
- Super Sport Nautiques (any year)
- Air Nautiques
- Super Air Nautiques - These are some of the best wake boats ever made and you'll be   be able to find models from the early 2000s in your price range.

The 82-89 Ski Nautique 2001 is definitely going to produce the best wake (size & shape) but it's a small boat. Sports car handling but comes at a price, does not like rough water.

Any of the 19' v-hulls (cut down 20' Southwind) will throw up a respectable wake and be much more comfortable but have truck like handling.

If he's after the classic dual burble as i suspect, that will also trim many the newer models from the list back too.....the 2001SN

Email Bob and make him an offer! I don't know of ANY other reverse gel big block Ski Nautiques in existence.

Rumor has it the N3 Boatworks 1986 Barefoot Nautique is up for sale. It's a burgandy colored hull with the big block Chevy.

If you want a colored hull look at 86-87 models. You might find a light blue hull earlier than this ("dresden") and a darker gray hull later. You could get a colored deck 88-89. Also, some metalflake gel 86-88.

They are all quite rare but the Diaries do house many of these examples.

With your budget I would also consider buying the hull you want and then another boat with the engine you want, pull a swap-a-roo and sell the reject.
