Hi, question on safety wire for packing gland. The holes on the gland nut and the fixed threaded piece for the packing gland lined up for the shortest safety wire installation but it was leaking like crazy. I tried tightening the gland nut 1 whole revolution so the safety wire holes lined up again but this was too tight and not getting enough drips. The optimum adjustment puts the hole on the packing gland on the opposite side in relation to the other hole which makes for a long safety wire that doesn't lay flat very well. Tightening the gland nut is all that is important here. If the safety holes line up then great, that's purely luck and bonus points if they do. Tighten the nut till you get the required drip then safety the nut wherever it lands in a ALWAYS tightening fashion. I prefer wire twisting the wire in the manner as shown in the below picture. Stronger method and that's how we fasten bolts in the aviation industry. ------------- "Morfoot; He can ski. Jim, FYI, there are many packing glands out there that don't even have holes for the safety wire. The concept of using safety wire is sound but also, I've never seen a gland nut/jam nut loosen without the wire ether. Welcome to CCfan, What boat do you have? Wow, sharp rig. Usually the safety wire ends up in the garbage after the first adjustment out of the factory. |

Thanks for the complements Waterdog and Hollywood. I bought this used and had the dealer install the tower. Ironically I had owned a used '97 Super Sport (purple and teal) from 2000 through 2004 that I sold when my brother and I shared a cottage for a few years (shared a MC Prostar 209 set up with tower and ballast). When we sold the cottage I moved to a lake and found this '97 used. Prices on new boats had gone up so much I think I paid almost the same for this one in 2007 as I did the purple and teal one in 2000. The other one had a single axle trailer that was marginal at best for the Super Sport, double axle is the way to go. ------------- bobruffner 1997 Nautique Super Sport |
