I have an early 289 Ford. The engine looked original with the Carter 2bbl. The strange thing that I can't get much information on is the crank. It does not have a harmonic balancer. The engine also has solid lifters which through a little research on the Ford Net shows they only ran those in Shelby's.

Even blowing smoke the engine easily turned 5000 RPM. The solids and lack of harmonic balancer are confusing me though.

Any information would be appreciated.

THe lack of a harmonic balancer is a little strange to me maybe someone took it off for parts over the years. You should be able to get a harmonic balancer from any auto parts or perfomance store. As for the solid lifters I would say someone rebuilt the motor and put a cam and those lifters in it thinking they could boost their performance. I doubt that your 289 cmae with solid lifters but then again i could be wrong. You said that the motor blew smoke so I am assuming that you are considering a rebuilt. I have a 1971 skier which i just finished rebuilding the 302 in it. I changed it over form reverse rotaion to standard. From what I understand from correct craft all the skiers came with revesre rotation. You may want to keep this in mind when considering a rebuild. It is much easier and cheeaper to make it standard rotaion by the way. If you have any questions abotu switching the motor over just let me knwo and I will help you out if I can. if you are operating the engine with out a harmonic balancer it could destroy your engine. By the way which end of the engine is the distributor in front or rear, could be a motor driving the trans from the harmonic balancer and you are looking at the flywheel end that does only drive the accessories. i have seen a chevy done this way in a chriscraft it was done because two left hand engines could be used in a dual engine setup without having to reverse the other engine.

The 289 HP had solid lifters and much stronger main beating caps that are cast from high nodular iron. The HP 289 was color coded with an orange paint swatch on the rear face of the block, or in front of the flywheel or flexplate.
