I'm in the process of replacing the Cutlass Bearings on my '97 SN and I decided to go with the XPC Vesconite bearings. These things seem way too loose around the shaft to me. I've replaced the old style brass/rubber Cutlass Bearings on sailboats before, and they were much tighter than these, but maybe that's normal for a slower turning shaft. I haven't used a feeler gauge on them yet, but they appear much looser than the specs that I've researched for the old brass/rubber bearings. Can anyone who has used these comment on their fitment?

The configuration of the XPC bearings that I received is not the same as those depicted on the SkiDim website at which I purchased them. I suspect that they have updated the design since that image was posted. I decided to go ahead and order a Johnson Duramax Brass/"Rubber" bearing and will install that for the upcoming season. I'm not comfortable enough with the the XPC bearings that I received until I obtain more info on them.

I installed my first set of these this past spring and am very happy with them so far. How are you determining that they're too loose? Could they have sent you a set that was the wrong size? I got mine from SKIDIM.

Installed the XPc bearing couple of years ago and having the same issues. Going to be installing a new ARE drive shaft in the spring and decided I'll be going back to the factory version. Christine's has the 6" one piece bearing. Hopefully it'll solve my howling noice as well.

I'll measure the difference between my shaft and the XPC bearings and post this weekend. I ended up getting the 6" old style bearing with brass housing from Propeller Depot for $58.99. I couldn't find anyone who came close to that price, and they sell top of the line bearings. You can get it even less if you go with the composite housing.

OK guys, so I was able to "measure" the difference between the XPC bearings that I received and a new original style (brass and rubber) cutlass bearing. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain a wire gauge, so I used paper as my gauge, and inserted the paper between the shaft and bearing in 1/4" strips on one side of the shaft only. Given that, I don't have actual numbers, but instead have relative measurements. These "measurements" apply to a 1" shaft and 1-1/4" inner diameter strut.
The spacing between the original style bearing and the shaft was the depth of 3 pieces of paper while the spacing between the XPC bearing and the shaft was the depth of 5 pieces of paper, meaning that the spacing between the shaft and bearing was 40% greater for the XPC bearing. Keep in mind that this is an extremely crude measurement and the rubber on the original style made it difficult to slide over the paper. Had I lubricated the rubber, I may have been able to place 4 pieces of paper between the shaft and bearing, bringing the difference down to 20%.
Conclusion: I believe the XPC bearings that I received are perfectly fine for a properly aligned drive shaft. I would venture a guess that the original style will "wear to fit" to a certain degree during use, and is therefore a bit more forgiving if your drive shaft is SLIGHTLY misaligned. If you use the XPC bearings, I believe that you really need to dial in your drive shaft alignment. Given the fact that they advertise up to 10 times greater life on these bearings, they may be rough on a misaligned driveshaft.
Although I've aligned my drive shaft according to specs, I've decided to go with the original style brass/rubber bearing this time around. I just feel a bit more comfortable with the original style 6" long bearing. It would be nice if they made a 6" long Visconite bearing.
