Need some help. 1994 Sport Nautique. Temp gauge showed overheating. Replaced the impeller and the thermostat, check all the hoses and found nothing. Put it back in the water and it is still overheating. I thought that the impeller sucked the water from the river by itself, but when I put my water hose on the bottom of the boat and remove the set screw on the impeller housing, no water. I remove the hose that feeds the impeller, put the water hose there, and turn the faucet on, and water shoots out, but I took the plug out of the water pump and no water comes out. I pulled the water pump off, found nothing and all the teeth are still good. I still don't think its the water pump because it wasn't leaking and the pully didn't squeal and moves smooth (no bearing shot). I'm lost. Any ideas???

removing the set screw does nothing, it holds a section of the pump in place and no water should come out of it, did you install the pump backwards? most likely...

It seems like every time I pull the water pump on mine, I can't remember which way to re-install it... I'm betting with 79 that the water pump is installed upside down...

It seems like every time I pull my impeller I can't remember which way to re-install the pump. I'm betting with 79 that your pump is upside down...good news is that if that's it, it's an easy fix!

I dont understand what you mean by puting the pump upsidedown. But is it possible to hook the hoses up backwards so that the pump is working against itself ? Just trying to understand.

the raw water pump can be mounted wrong very easily, the circulation pump can't. Depending wheather the set screw towards the block or away from the block determinds which direction the water is pumped inside of the housing so that it can be used on a right hand or left and rotating engine.
So suff a garden hose in to the hose end connect to the pick up, disconnect the hose from the RWP at the t-stat housing and crank the motor if water comes out of the hose then it's mounted correctly if it doesn't then you have it on upside down or a 180 degrees from where it should be, then again if the set screw is facing towards the engine odds are it's on wrong, if my memory is right and it hasn't been lately.

Set screw pointing away from block on Reverse rotation engines. If Mayberry was able to remove the cam screw, then odds are good that he has it installed correctly. But, is the cam now just loose inside the pump?

Tip, putting a garden hose into the RWP will help locate blockage downstream but since the water coming in from the hose is under pressure, it wont tell how good a job the impeller is doing. So you may have aproblem as outlined above or another problem upstream from the RWP like an airleak(suction). I eventually put a 0-15psi gauge directly on my engine in the water jacket which gives me a quick check each time I fire it up to see if I've got cooling water pressure to the enigne.
