I have a 19' 78' SN 351w Commander/ Velvet Drive/ 1" shaft. It needs a new prop and I am considering replacing the (original?) 1279 Federal NT-BKAL CUP 13RH13 #HH49012 ( 3 blade) prop with the Acme #540 or another you guys might suggest.

I saw Keith's article and wondered if anyone might know how much clearance is enough for the 540 to fit without having it recut etc.?
I have 5/8" between the blade and the hull now.

Also I think I need new bushings and wondered how they get replaced. Any special tools or other reccomendations or tricks?

Many Thnks,
NM

Mike...I just got a 540 (for a 72 SN), but have not run it yet...still waiting for my seats to get finished
Anyway...it is 13 inch diameter same as the old one...so fit is not a prob.
Let you know how it performs.

5/8's??? that is really close...I have at least an inch.

I like the 540, huge difference, direct bolt on. Bushings? Dunno, never changed them. When I find another $300, I would like to try out an OJ 3 blade legend also.

My new 4 blade OJ prop is outstanding. Amazing low and mid-range acceleration. I find that my boat doesn't vibrate as much. The wake is smoother at 30 MPH. I'm using in on my '86. Big difference!
