Been searching the forums for how best to reduce the transmission whine on my 1989 SN 2001. I've seen reference to adding an 8" hose to one of the plugs, and as well some other ideas. I think the noise is probably normal for that year boat with the 123:1 trans. BUT if there is a way to make it better I'm all ears. Thank you!

The 8" hose off the case supposedly helped reduce the low speed buzzing on the early trans, not the whine. Not much you can do about the whine itself, but insulating the motorbox may make it less noticeable if it bothers you. It's probably only noticeable compared to other ski boats because the 2-into-1 muffler is so effective at silencing the exhaust.

Another note I read in the forums was around the "early" transmission having more whine than the later versions. I cant tell if that's even within that same model year 1989? Wondering if finding another "early" model could be quieter? The whine is only noticeable when I'm idling around, which I do a lot of. The muffler has been removed, and replaced with what is an inline smaller muffler. So that boat sound great to me, but would like to not hear then whiney trans when idling around.

It's just the nature of the beast. I don't even notice it anymore.

That is what I keep reading mostly. If anyone else has other ideas that have been effective, please let me know. Love the boat so not a major issue. What/where do you buy the insulation material for the motorbox? Could be a good option.

The PO for my '89 had the reduction gears replaced for this. Eric (the tranny guy) said the gears were badly pitted. It still whines, but I assume it was worse before.
Unless you absolutely can;t stand it, I would just live with it. It might be an expensive wild goose chase trying to fix it.

Tell everybody it's the supercharger spooling up.
Personally, every time I hear one of these trannys whining, I think they sound cool. For you guys that don't like it, don't ever get a turbo or supercharged engine. You'll hate that too.
