Hi,
Is there any alternative to the $300 steering cable for a 1983 2001 Ski Nautique it is unique in that it is 17.5 feet long.

No.
At least not if you're unwilling to sacrifice steering performance (turning radius).

I just bought the 2001 cable. I haven't regretted the decision to go with the original. Buy from Nautique Parts and use discount code PND for 10% discount.

Karl,
I'll add to what Tim states. The OEM cable has more stroke so it moves the rudder the proper needed degrees whereas the standard off the shelf cable won't. Yes, you will not be able to turn the boat as intended.
