When driving in a straight line the steering on my '97 Super Sport is super indirect. You have to turn the wheel around I guess 60 degrees before the boat starts turning. As soon as it starts turning it steers fine, so only around the centered position it has this issue. Any suggestions on what/how to check? Thanks!

Sander, First check for play from the helm back. You shouldn't have to turn the wheel that much. If OK or slight, you may consider tuning the rudder. It puts a slight load on the rudder. If you don't have a tunable rudder, filing a bevel on the leading or trailing edge works.

That does sound very strange, have you tried blocking the rudder while on the lift or trailer and then turning the wheel each way to see what is happening??

Thats because your driving a big old tub it's a Nautique in name only. Seriously though check where your steering cable mounts to the back stringer,Quinner's neighbor's SS the bolt pulled out of the stringer and was loose. Stripped the aluminum backing plate, I believe he was able to drill and tap next size up.

That is correct, Gary. I went with a big stainless steel lag bolt and it is never coming loose again.. I am betting this is your problem.

Try to bring someone with to move the steering wheel While you are at the rudder linkage. It's either loose back there or possibly the helm is worn. Sometimes people keep steering with a worn cable and it really wreaks havoc on the fragile aluminum worm gear and rack.
Let us know what you find. We all like to help and solve this stuff.
