I can't get the damn set screws out of the strut. I may have to drill them out if the Easy-Out doesn't work.

Any suggestions for set screw replacement? I can't find anything on skidim or nautiqueparts. Are they brass or stainless steel? I've heard of some folks leaving them out completely.

Next question: Vesconite or standard brass/rubber bearings?

Rob,
I'd use the set screws even if the new cutlass is a tight fit in the strut. They aren't anything special. Your local hardware store will have them in SS,

As far as going plastic or rubber, I'd say it's a 50 - 50 split with opinions. It's your call on which to use.

I had to drill all 4 screws on two different struts. I used a drill that was about the diameter of the hex key. Then I used a good extractor to back them out with some kroil.

Update...

I tried an Easy-Out and one of the set screws came out. The second one was frozen solid. I was worried that the Easy-Out would break off and leave me with a bigger problem, so I drilled the screw out.

When I finally got the damn strut bearing out, I re-drilled both set screw holes and tapped them for a #10 fine thread. The local H-D had stainless steel set screws in #10 fine thread that were 3/16" long. Problem solved. I plan on blue Loctite to keep the new set screws in-place.
