Hello,
I have a 1989 SN 2001. The steering has become very difficult. I am not sure if this needs a steering cable replacement or if there is some other issue. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate some advice. I am also not sure if there is any place to lubricate or grease.
Thank you,
Don

mine was pretty stiff also, all I did was turn the wheel all the way each way and lube both ends of the cable with grease a few times. It wasnt long until the steering was smooth as butter.

Its probably the cable, but do a quick test first: disconnect the cable from the rudder (at the rudder) and see how the steering feels. If its smooth, then drop the rudder and smooth up and grease the shaft. Most likely though, it will still be hard to turn, indicating the cable is the cause of your problems. Try Trike's solution. If it doesnt help after a while, replace the cable.

Steering Rule #1- don't let your boat sit all winter without working the steering back and fourth at least every two months.

Dudes,
my sport has been difficult to steer at times. After skiing through december and into New Year's I decided to do some work in January. My buddies MC is on a lift in the water so if I get a few chances here in January, it'll have to be behind his boat.

I just disconnected the steering cable and wallah! Wheel turns easy as pie. So then I thought the rudder would be a tough turn, but when I got under the boat and turned it, it turned easy as pie too. I guess I'll grease the cable and drop the rudder and grease it too. Any other things I should try?

All newer CC's (starting with the 2001 hull in 1982) use special Correct Craft steering cables that can only be ordered through the dealer. Trying to retrofit a generic cable will result in headaches and a decreased turning radius once youre done. http://shopwhitelake.com/stcaallnafr1.html - White Lake Marine has good pricing.

Also try looking at the helm tilt mechanism.. mine had a bump in the steer when going side to side.. It didnīt show out of the water but it was hard while floating navigating on any speed. Solution was to adjust the inside assy (you have to move the rubber boot that covers it)... no need to replace the cable.. now it steers smoothly...
Hope you get my explanation
