Hey Fellas, just getting time to post our latest ride. This fall a local guy (knew him from my N3 Days and the river) had for sale a brochure color scheme 90 BFN.
The boat has been maintained mechanically pretty well other than a junk Dizzy and dirty neutral. Structurally and interior wise it's in great shape just needing the observers seat base and drivers seat base replaced.
Winter plans include a transmission rebuild/trailer refurb for function/wet sand buff and decals.
I will update this thread as we make progress but here are some photos from when we picked it up. Sorry they aren't the best.
The motor runs exceptionally well despite having a locked distributor timing mechanism. It went 50.0 on GPS with the tach showing around 4950.00 running Tim's spare 430. GPS confirmed speed by a Garmin Etrex not an I phone app. Mid range and hole shot are so good I would be reluctant to step up to a 1598 for an extra mph up top.

Beyond clutch packs, bearings and seals, the only other thing I feel is needed is checking the health of the pump. There are specs on pressure but the trans needs to be assembled and turning to use that. I know Eric used to chuck his rebuilds up in his lathe to check. The only other way is to check pump clearances and I have yet to find Velvet specs on them. I do know with a geared hydraulic pump .0005 at the teeth and the same between the gears and housing is a rule of thumb.
Zach, Nice!!

I hook mine to an old riding mower with a horizontal shaft and an electric clutch.
A splined hub from an old damper plate welded to a pulley and a v belt make things go round.
Depending on where I mount the transmission, I can do righty's and lefty's.
Due to the "hackish" nature of this setup I usually do it in the backyard under a shadetree at night
But.................it works

Probably within 3 inches anyways. Pete would be proud of my alignment job
Rubber belt with a little twist of sorts, it's a good thing I don't have to run it very long to check pressures. Transmission angle is a little funny too, to get things lined up pretty close.
I keep saying I'm going to build a better bracket but I don't use it very often

I don't think it's frozen in the block "locked distributor timing mechanism" I think it's either stuck in full advance or it's stuck in the opposite

Spec sheet would be nice but like you, I have not been able to come up with any. Future thought: If Zach decides to install a new pump we would be able to check new dim's against used pump dim's. Pumps are really not that expensive. I did do a visual on my pump components and could see no wear marks on gears or housing. ( FWIW). It would be nice to set up a pressure test fixture to check the relief valve also.

Thanks dudes. Pete/Duane/Ken. The trans operates wonderfully aside from the dirty neutral. Planning on just clutch/plate replacement and associated seals. It has around 850 hours. Silky smooth with the acme on it.
Will be picking up and Angola cover and a 430 of my own. Motor had a recent carb build by a very reputable shop in Indy. Thanks to Brad Harper I have an awesome Mallory dizzy to drop in until I spend cash on a DUI setup. Trailer is decent but needs things like carpet/steps/tires/lights etc.
It’s got a few chips and scratches I think I can handle with sanding and some patch paste.

You got that wrong
It's really "you're not dumb enough to test it with a lawnmower"
The original reason for the lawn mower test rig was to test a used transmission that was said to be good when I got it.

It turned out very nice from what I saw if you like that style. Colors looked great. It was stupid fast, Turned a 668 5600 rpms at 56 mph on the rev limiter and got there in a hurry. If there were a prop with just a little more pitch I would guess it would be a 58 mph boat or so.
Really good engine selection for that hull.

OK guys, here with the virus/working from home I thought I would take a little time to update the BFN project. While it was a very nice starting point the Gel was in much worse shape than originally thought.
We spent this winter sanding and buffing rubrail down to the chines. Photos below of before and after stuff. We took it down to many aggressive 320 passes to get all the yellowing out of the blue. Some still on the stbd but you can't really see it in natural light. Would have continued on but I found a thin spot in the blue on the port and didn't want to continue sanding aggressively.
Since it was the "Brochure" scheme for 1990 we stuck with the grey/white decal theme. I was able to get the colors of the pin stripes matched exactly and got a company to do a run of the proper sized pinstripe although it cost me.
The transmission had very dirty neutral but otherwise operated flawlessly. The plan was to throw in clutches and seals but I happened upon a supposed new old stock 72c locally. Cool story behind it. The owner (now 85 years old) was building California style V drive boats back in the mid to late 70s. He never built the last boat that someone had ordered and the transmission was never installed or painted etc. I cleaned it up and swapped the pump for RH rotation. We just fired it up this weekend with no dirty neutral and it goes out of gear perfectly fine. A test drive will tell the full story but it sounds good as is!
Despite the looks and the transmission condition we put somewhere around 80-100 hours on it last season so it is getting some good use. Matter of fact, the brown 85 didn't even touch the water last season.
Anywho, check out then progress photos below.

Love the pic with the Before and after gel. When you talk about thin spots that’s a sign of resolve. Maybe a time to get a waterline cover if you’re gonna leave it outside at all. Can’t wait to see the photos with new decals and pinstripe. This site is like one of those reality TV restoration shows except we don’t have to wait for the big finish—we get to see all of the wonder that goes on beforehand.

Zach....Nice looking old barefoot. You got it looking good. If not mistaken, I "think" that the original brochure from back in the day "may" have been done with some Indiana Correct Craft royalty.
I "think" that was one of the O'Malia boys (Randy??), and his crew in that boat. Any chance your boat IS that boat? I "think" O'Malia was the guy that opened Morse Lake Inboards in up Cicero in the '80's which was a CC dealer. Morse Lake also produced a local "boy wonder" skiing and tubing champeen in the mid/late 60's behind his dads 14' Chryzler w/110 Merc Tower on it. I forget his name now.

Thanks Dave, I have heard of those guys but never actually met them. Used to foot a ton back in the day.
This boat was rumored to be that boat in the photos but the build number pretty much kills that chance. It was originally owned by a local guy named Steve Howey.

I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but, I can remember seeing quotes from 30 year old brochures. :)

Gary....I know that area down by the Cary CC. I have seen several Correct Craft's down in that area. Weren't they more of a service/repair dealership? Also, didn't they also try their hand with MasterCraft after the CC deal?? I may be crossing up my wires, but, I seem to recall talking to one of the brothers, or mabye someone else about it.

With the mother in law in and out of the hospital and the river being closed,2 hours were put on the boat last year. Don't know about the Mastercraft stuff or about their service/repair. The couple of times I was there my friend had not started helping them yet, they had no one there to do any of that

Alright Larry, your pickin' on my mower driven test rig has forced me to post a picture of my new semi modern transmission test rig.
It runs on some of that magic modern stuff called electricity An old 220 volt 3 HP motor and a couple of pulleys that turn the transmission at roughly 850 rpm. (3 HP is way overkill, but it's what I had) Slap it onto a mount that angles the motor the same as the transmission, use some unistrut for the transmission mounts to slide on and the belt alignment and tension adjustment is a piece of cake. The mounts are some unistrut pieces and angle iron welded together. It's all on a piece of plywood mounted on a Harbor Freight dolly It can test that a transmission goes into Neutral,Forward and Reverse and check operating pressures too. It can run a righty or a lefty transmission by swapping a couple of wires on the motor. It's got clear nylon reinforced hose so I can watch the oil circulate Being really quiet with the electric motor running it, you also hear the noises that the planetary gears make in Reverse And................I can keep my simple mind occupied for hours on end watching the pulleys go round and round and round and ............well you get it Comes in pretty handy to be sure it works before going back in a boat or to see if that used treasure actually works. Can't really test for slippage but if the pressures are good it's most likely gonna be OK. Myself, I think it's a marvel of "backyard hackery" Pete might even agree with the backyard hackery part

It’s still sporting the original nautical rubber flaps so why not.

Looks like you put them back on after you took them off. Some I know would have thrown them in the trash. We always had them back in the day.

Ken, very envious of your test rig. I was dreaming up something like that with all my thoughts on If this 40 year old unused transmission was going to work ha. | If you do make one up like Kens, be careful not to run it for very long. There's no bearing at the front end of the trans so it's not designed for any side loads on the input shaft. I would suggest coupling it directly to the motor. If you want variable speed, then use a 3 phase motor driven by a VFD. Eric always chucked them up in his engine lathe.

Umm................ Pete
What's that thing called in the center of the forward and reverse adapter that supports the input shaft?
B/W calls it a needle bearing.
There's a whole whopping maybe 2 1/2 inches of beefy shaft in front of that bearing.

Oh sure, wait till I've stayed up running this thing all night thinking about you and side loading my shaft to see what happens
That just doesn't sound very good, I think Hollywood and Quinner will get all excited reading this

Hah Gary, I remember Foxfire Marine & Mike D. Back in the day he did some work on my 77' in that old Quonset Hut. IIRC some years later he ended up at Skipper Buds/Chicago Sea Ray for a stint.
Don't all tranny's still have shafts?

You’d have to do some sort of motor that had speeds available to direct couple. If I’m not incorrect most industrial motors (compressor wise anyhow) are either 1750 or 3250 rpm units. Slam that baby into gear.
Quinner considered a full rebuilt at some point I bet.

I like your test Mule Ken, sure beats installing the tranny bolting everything up and finding out it has a problem out on the water. Nice work.. Safer and quieter than a lawn mower engine.

Little update on the 90 for anyone interested.
Lots of work happened this winter. The gel was much worse than it looked and we needed to sand very aggressively down to 320 on the wet sand and the process of bringing it back from that took a while. All I can say is there is a ton more surface area on a BFN vs a 2001 when it comes to sanding. The finished product turned out excellent (Photos below).
The graphics that went back on were to mimic the 1990 brochure. If the boat wouldn't have been put back to its headliner condition I likely would have darkened the main lettering up to match the charcoal secondary stripe.
I had to bite the bullet and pay 120 bucks for double roll of the correct size pin for the bottom. Luckily, the company that I found that could do it for me used some really nice vinyl and the color match was a 100% match to original. The boat didn't need much on the inside so just a quick buff up on the deck to remove some haze.
The NOS 72C has been a great success. I had my doubts about it sitting that long as far as seals and such go but the thing has performed flawlessly. We are around 80-85 hours for the season on it.
It's had a big year so far. Its crowning achievement was pulling the Deep Rudders to our first legitimate Buckethead podium finish (3rd place) and our fastest time we've ever turned in for the race.

Nice job and congratulations to the Rudders on their 3rd place. I’ve been to quite a few of the buckethead races and the competition is legit, there are some FAST teams that practice together all year. The Rudders come from all over the creation and may practice together maybe once or twice and to capture third place is one heck of an accomplishment. My hats off to you gents congrats again.
Zach that clip of the beginning of the race shows how the ‘90 was hauling the mail that thing was smoked the field. Great job.
