Long time reader, first time poster. When I put a load on the electrical system, such as starting the boat with the blower on, the main circuit breaker aft of the engine will sometimes pop. The engine will still be running, but i can tell it has popped because the needle on the tach will jump around erratically. The boat has actually been doing this for quite some time, I have been to lazy to address the problem. Also, whenever I turn the nav lights on, the gauges will go nutty - they will show low oil pressure, high water temp, etc. Is it a bad voltage regulator or what??? Thanks in advance. |

Check all connections to make sure they are tight & clean. Are the wires showing any corrosion? The clue is that is acts up under heavy load. Could be bad breaker too. Tim, +1 on what Chris said and as far as the gauges bouncing around and showing lower readings when you turn the lights on....thats normal. Most 80's SN's have this same phenomenon. The ground wires to the gauges are all daisy chained together. Some guys have rewired the dash so that each gauge has a dedicated ground. Like the others said, the gauge problem is typically bad dash connections. I just completely rewired my dash to eliminate those problems. I had added additional power and ground wires in the past and that helped a lot but over time the crimp connections get corroded. I added buss bars for ground, key switched power and ignition breaker power and ran a single wire to each connection point to eliminate the daisy chains (although I left the chain for the gauge lights, just replaced all the connectors). Also added a new 12V lighter socket and a dual USB charging port.
