My wife I are proud owners of a 2002 Air Nautique we bought new in 2002. We love the boat! We chose a Correct Craft not only because we had owned one prior (a 1995 Ski Nautique), but because we like the values and history of the firm and owners. Since we have owned the boat we have only had a couple issues to deal with. One particular issue has become frusterating and a little surprising about how it is being handled. Each of our digital gauges have malfunctioned and need to be repaired or replaced. The gal at the dealer has been very nice and helpful, but said replacing the digital gauges with the same gauges ultimately leads to the same problem. She said nearly all of them fail. We have a 5 year full warranty from Correct Craft which promises to replace (or fix) issues such as these. She offered us to switch to a analog gauge at a discounted price sponsored by Correct Craft ($125) plus labor costs (3 hours at $95/hour). We have settled on the idea of paying to switch to analog gauges, but do not understand why Correct Craft would not pay for the labor to install them. If we stay with the same gauges, Correct Craft will replace the gauges with the same ones (which will fail again). One way, is for us to share the costs in the replacement of the gauges, but why should we be paying for the labor to install them?

Has anyone else had this issue?

I'm a little surprised Correct Craft is taking this position. Or, is it me?

This is a big problem with the 2000-2002 boats and has made many-a-owner unhappy. If this is the first time you are getting them swapped out, consider having them install an analog hour gauge and have them run it up to the current hours on the boat. This may help you a bit on resale as you try to explain the hours to the next owner. Other than that there is not much you can do. Mine have been replaced twice and luckily the current digital gauges have been going OK since 2003.

Thanks M3Fan. I plan to fix the issue the first time through. The gauges have been out for about a year (I have been relying on my Perfect Pass). I guess Correct Craft's position is to replace the bad with bad or charge for a permanent fix. They know the gauges go out, so why not fix the problem?

Anyway, I will pay for the new gauges, but think they should pay for the installation of the new gauges; since they would be paying for installation of the other gauges anyway.

You should be able to do it yourself. I posted the pictures of how to do it about a year ago. It took about 1.5 hours as you just use a Y wire yoke to the PP and don't have to install the paddlewheel.

CC does seem to have problems with gauges as they are on thier third vendor I think?
First was Teleflex then VDO and now Faira I think that is the order. My boat also needed new gauges, it had VDO and I did not have the boat covered a few times when it rained and moisture got in them and the minerils from the water glazed the lens on all of them. Luckily CC now sells a replacement package of Faria gauges, however the old style Tachometers are in short supply with the 3 ½ inch hole because all the new ones went to 4’’ Anyhow gauges don’t seem to be their strong point.

bnv,

I'm on my fourth set. The speedo and the tach have failed. Worse, the 2001 guages were black. They now make them only in silver. It looks ok, but obviously not original. My boat is a 2001 and they still replaced the guages this summer. Other than the hour meter going back to zero each time, hasn't bother me that much. The fix does seem to be to go to the Farias, and everyone I know has been charged to do so. BKH

I think I'll go into the gauge business. Isn't there anyone out there that can make good gauges? What a joke!

I can hardly believe what you've described...and to have it verified by these other guys! "Pay for analog and installation, or we'll replace with originals for free." That's almost unbelievable. So they'd rather keep doing the labor over and over again than fix it once the right way? Would CC rather keep paying dealers for labor over and over again instead of making it right when they know there is an issue? And what are they replacing them with? Has someone stockpiled up a huge inventory of these bad gauges somewhere that CC dealers can order to replace the ones that have gone bad? Surely the replacement gauges (that are silver now since black is no longer available)have been refined and the failure issues are being resolved.

One thing that I see some on this board is complaints about CC dealers who have poor service departments. I know I will avoid my local dealer and drive 5 hours to the one I trust if I ever have to have mine worked on by a dealer (which will probably never happen, but it's fun to say that). Last time I took my boat to the CC dealer (my boat then was a Supra) it came back with a dead battery and a gel coat gouge in the front from my trailer! Maybe we could start a thread rating our local CC dealers' service departments in different areas. I, too, like the philosophy and values of CC and it's one of the reason I'll never own another brand. But my experience with some of their people isn't quite as quaint as their brochure.

bnv, I hope you can get this rectified. Have you talked with the manager or just "the gal who has been nice?" I think it would be worth it to raise your voice a little.

Bummer.

I dont think CC changed from VDO because they were not good gauges but because of price! VDO Marine Gauges cost anywere from $200 to $40 per Gauge and the Farias you can buy a whole set for under $300.00. When I tried to round up a VDO set the were going to cost over $500. Wow they must have gold inside

I have changed my gauges once wqith the digital. I also bought the anolg gauges so I have them in case they ever stot discounting them. I think the reason CC dose not pay for the labor is because the gauges are warrented by teleflex not CC directly. CC offered the other gauges because they know teleflex cant not fix the problem.
I have a question for 2000 ski. You said you use a Y wire yoke to the PP. I don't have PP. Is that the only way it will work without installing the paddle wheels?

I am having the same problem with the tachometer. It is fading out. However, I am trying to sell the boat right now and want to accurately represent the hours. The owners manual says the hours are stored in a non-volatile memory. If I replace the tachometer will that zero out the hours? Is the non-volatile memory stored in the tachometer itself or somewhere else? I don't want to replace the tachometer and have the hours read zero.

Thanks!

After replacing the Teleflex gauges and zeroing your hours is there a way to recover the hours from the old gauges?

My understanding is that the Faria's only work with the type of signal that comes from a paddlewheel. If you already have a Perfect Pass (with it's accompanying paddlewheel) you can just tap into this signal.

Check out these intrtuctions:

What did the failing Teleflex's use to pick up a speed signal?
