I have a 1981 PCM Ford 351. The bendix on the starter motor gets hung up once in a while. Can it be fixed or should I buy a new starter motor. If I need a new starter where can I get one?. Thanks.

Is it the original style starter?

The obvious answer is that of course it can be fixed

It doesn't matter what type starter you have, take it out and look at the shaft the gear rides on, it could be corroded/rusty and need some cleaning up which isn't very hard to do.

If the starter works fine other than that issue, I'd try that before just buying a new one.

A better description would help too, like does it hang up in the engaged position or does it just spin and not engage at all.

If it hangs up in the engaged position it could be because of a solenoid issue or even an ignition switch issue.

My Gawd, I'm sounding like Pete now, I think I need to go see the shrink again today

Thanks for your reply. It stays engaged once in a while after the engine starts. It stays engaged for a few seconds and then releases.

As Ken mentioned, the first thing I'd check is to make sure it's not the ignition switch still sending power to the start relay. Get the VOM out.

It's a fairly new starter switch, including battery, battery cables, and solenoid. The bendix hanging up on dirty or corroded traveler sounds like a likely problem. Thanks.
