I have had an 81 nautique for 30 days and have been working on it since then. The claim was that it has been winterized and that it should fire right up. I was able to see it running on the ramp but not well enough to take to the lake with much faith. Its timing was way off and we were getting misfires coming out the top of carb. Replaced the harmonic balancer and condensor, cleaned the points and was able to time it and get it running smooth. I had feared fuel issues but it will idle with ease. Great, off to the lake....nope. I have a nasty ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from 1 or 2. An inspection of the valve springs, rocker arms and push rods show that all is well in my novice opinion. I am afraid of what that leaves but I thought I would throw it to the forum and see you all thought. Thanks in advance for any help. I took a video and will add to this topic a link for the experts to review. Thanks in advance

If it goes away when you close the engine cover, and you did the inspection, and all the rockers move the same amount, Fugetabout*t.
By '82 boat ticks since I got it in '96... waiting for it to frag so I can repower
still waiting...

Could be an exhaust leak.

It could be a sticking hydraulic lifter. Try some Rislone oil additive...it does a good job of freeing up stuck lifters.

Could be a mis adjusted rocker arm, piston slap, bad lifter, exhaust leak.

Disconnect the plug wire from offending cylinder to rule out piston slap. If noise goes away, then you have piston slap.
