How tuff is the gland replacement and do they have newer designs available for the older boats? Someone told me that they have replaced the packing gland with the boat in the water. Is this feasible or an insurance claim waiting to happen? Replies: Posted By: Jamie Date Posted: June-07-2004 at 9:29pm Be safe and pull the boat out of the water to do this procedure, afford yourself plenty of time do get it done right. You can use the old stand by - flax packing with the supplied teflon lubricant, or the new 'nearly dripless' all teflon packing. The drip rate should be no more than 6 drops or so every minute - with the prop turning. You should get less than that in static form. The old timers love the flax packing, as I do, although there has been some great reports on the new dripless stuff. Since my boat is a '68 nautique I went with the flax. So far, fantastic!
