After a series of problems I'm putting back together the fuel system with all the correct parts.

I have a 65 barracuda with an M318B wide block polyhead. I now have the correct mechanical fuel pump and it has an overflow tube for when the diaphram fails. (the original pump did not, and dumped the fuel into the bilge)

The carb is a Carter AFB. I was intending to drill a hole in the original brass flame arrestor and attach a hose barb to run the overflow tube up to.

After looking at the carb, There is a port for a vacuum line that would go to the distributor in an automotive application. I Threaded a hose barb into that port and attached the line there.

Will this work, I don't see any reasons it would not. The line would provide a small amount of vacuum on the top side of the fuel pump diphram but I don't think It would affect the operation of the pump. Is there something I'm missing here? It will be a much cleaner install this way.

I spoke to a mechanic, his oponion was not to expose the pump to the vacuum, due to potential problems. I drilled a hole in the flame arrestor flange and soldered the fitting in. Done.
