Can't get to run @ 600rpm in gear and keep rpms below 1400 in neutral. Reset all throttle and tranny linkages to where it does not pull throttle linkage until engaged in gear. Set low idle screws to what seems right at 600rpm in gear then pull back to neutral and hits 1400rpm for 45 seconds and eventually comes back down to 600. Pain in the butt to put on shore station waiting for rpm's to go below 1000 to not damage tranny. Any help appreciated.

Wonder if there is enough tention to pull linkage back fast enough...do you have a spring on the carb that attatches to a bolt on the intake?
Also...when you ajusted the throttle...did you pre load it? Preloading...move the throttle from neutral to forward neutral(right before tranny engages)set throttle there as opposed to setting it with the lever in neutral.

You could do a check....when you drop it back to nuetral...move the linkage by hand to see if if is back or will go back(if it's hung up).

as far as the return spring it is the same one that was on before carb rebuild, and stil seems to have good tension on it. when i set the throttle cable it was in neutral though and i thought i read to do that on one of these forums here a while back looking for some answers, but thats going off of memory which is pretty bad. could a vacuum leak play a part in this scenario even though i can't seem to find it with a can of carb cleaner.

I probably should have mentioned it's an 86 Nautique with a 351 and been my baby for about 6 years. it's been my dream to own one since i was knee high to a gra$$hoper.

I suggest confirming and or checking the engine timing first. Then adjust the carburetor idle mixture screws (not the low idle linkage adjustment since I a$$ume you've already confirmed that's not your problem) until you get maximum RPM's.

Good Luck

stang72 I think your throttle setting suggestion is great advice, I,m betting that is what my problem is, at least one of them anyway. When I was setting it with the lever straight up in neutral, I was watching to make sure the throttle wouldn't start to open till it was engaged, and when I got that accomplished I couldn't keep it from opening going in to reverse. Figured that was do to a 1/2" of play in the cables, and more rpms was better in reverse until I got my hands on some new ones. Sounds like with your suggestion this might fix two problems for me and save the cost of new cables. Can't wait to try thursday night when I get back to the river. Thanks again.

Hope so! I'll bet it hit reverse a bit hard !

Once you re-adjust it...if still high rmps in N , see if you can move back a little by hand....that might indicate cables are old and stiff or something is binding.
