What are your long term plans for the boat? Purely pleasure, just keep it running or LONG term are you considering a restoration?? If restoration, keep it original and find a RH 260. Probably a lot of fab and/ or different parts if you switch platforms so if a resto is in its future you are better off spending some time to find a match.

Thanks for the input I think that year came with the 318 poly motor. I still have time to hunt for an original power plant I need to replace the stringers first.

Don't forget we'd love to see more pictures especially of the stringers you need to replace. Also, to keep everyone on the same page, maybe you should keep posting in your original thread?

What I get out of this thread and your other one is that you don't know what you want to do with this boat.
A couple of times you've been asked if you want to do a complete restoration and keep it all original and a couple of times you haven't answered that question
Mr. Original (Pete) has given you a link to a couple of engines that didn't exist in 1965. Those 318's in the link are LM series and you think you might want an original Poly head engine.
So..........if you decide what you want to do, that would be a big help
If originality doesn't matter and that SBC came from an inboard, has a Borg Warner transmission and has exhaust manifolds and is a running engine it might be a good choice for practical reasons.
Here's a link to a 350 Chevy in a Barracuda resto mod

Thanks for the link, I would love to keep this project going original I believe the 318 is the only motor offered I just fell across that gm 350 and trans complete and it's the right rotation. I wish there were more options. There are a few more places to look for a 318 poly. I would love to have the drive line iam going to use while replacing the stringers.

I wouldn't worry about that too much, they both would use the same transmission and the motor mounts are adjustable for either in terms of height and the stringers are going to be at the same standard for either. Worst case is you have to drill a couple new holes for your motor mount and fill in the old ones if you wanted to go with one over the other. Poly engines still exist for sure as I have one in pieces around somewhere but all the parts get more difficult to find each year, so if you are looking for a daily driver a rh 350 is probably a good choice. as long as it was originally in an inboard boat and has all the expensive manifolds, pumps, brackets etc. Although if someone has a running pullout poly they are cool getting rare enough to be cool,

The 350 is in a full inboard Chris craft Catalina 251 the problem is I have to take the whole boat but it's complete and running not a bad option.

Given the purpose of the name of the boat originally was a boat with a Chrysler theme, I'd say hold to find a 318 of either flavor (A or LA) . More fun yet a 340

I suspect the 260 out of the barracuda.
So original option for this boat would be swap cam and crankshaft into the 289 and use all the 260 accessories.
Knowing now that the 350 is not a modern turnkey setupi wouldn't recommend it at all..
Early 318s of either flavor are certainly a nice option as well ...

Going to use my left hand 289 because I just found out the trans can be set up for left or right hand rotation, I just took off the trans and it's clocked for left hand rotation already so looks like iam good to go. I know it's not correct but it's going to be a lot of fun.

You may have this rotation thing totally understood and then again you may not
You say that the transmission that you just took off I assume your 260 which is reverse rotation is already clocked for Left hand rotation so you're good to go.. This makes me think you may not understand.since Borg Warner looks at rotation differently (from the front looking back) so for your automotive rotating 289 you will need to set up the transmission for RH rotation The easiest way is to look at the arrow at the top and make sure it points the way the engine rotates.
In the interest of saving you a lot of aggravation and some time pulling and reindexing a transmission after it's already installed in the boat and doesn't work, you should read the thread in the link, paying particular attention to the direction of the little arrow. It's a lot of confusing reading and you might need to read it more than once.
You could post a picture of the front of your transmission showing the arrow and the LH stamping also

Both stringer templates done spent the day hunting down Doug fir. Downs and reader great place for specialty wood. (2) 12' 2x10 was the same money as what i paid for my boat. Beautiful wood it's a shame once the floor is down you'll never see it again.
