| Just put my '97 SN/GT40 with 550 hours in for the season and noticed a ticking in the engine. Doing some research I learned that by pulling the spark plug wire while idling, if the ticking doesn't stop then it's most likely valves or a push rod and can be fixed. If the noise does stop, the cylinder is scorched. Unfortunately, for me, the ticking did stop. This is my 4th season with the boat and I'm pretty meticulous about good gas, temp, oil, filters, etc. My question is: what are my options assuming that this is in fact the issue? It's my understanding the GT40 can't be rebuilt. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/options. |

If you click on the link below, you'll see a thread where the guy (MBShaw88)had a ticking that went away when he pulled the plug wire and after lots of scary discussion he was ready to take stuff apart and found some loose exhaust manifold bolts, tightened them up and the tick went away. He had checked for exhaust leaks and didn't think he had any, but there was one. A couple of new gaskets or maybe checking all the bolts tight could maybe solve your issue cheaply and easily. Even if they're tight you may need new gaskets Felpro MS90000 exhaust gaskets installed shiny metallic side out work well and are available most anywhere. Exhaust manifold work can be easy or really aggravating depending on the condition of the bolt heads. I'm gonna be optimistic and think that you have an exhaust leak especially on a cold start coming out of storage. | Well after reading Keno's post Sunday night I thought there was a 1% chance I'd be that lucky. Plus, it really sounds metallic - "how could it be exhaust...?" Well, yesterday morning I let it warm up slowly then ran at 2500 RPM for a bit and the ticking was gone! BTW - that side had the exhaust manifold replaced with a non-PCM manifold before I bought it. The bolts were a bit stiff so I left them alone for now. I was very hopeful so I did a compression test later in the day when cool and it was within 2psi (153 psi) of the test from 4 years ago when I bought it. I never would have figured this out on my own and I can't thank you guys enough, especially Keno. Thanks again! |
