Hi - Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day;. Took my 89' SN out to the lake yesterday with the family and it was hard to start and was running terribly. Noticed that there was fuel coming from the mechanical fuel pump through the clear sight tube and going back into the carb. It's a new Carter 60389 mechanical fuel pump that I purchased and installed last December. I'm reading that fuel in the sight tube indicates a bad diaphragm in the pump. Since it's new is there anything else I should check or is this a sure-fire indicator that the pump is bad? Boat ran fine previous 4-5 trips . Thanks in advance!

William, You are correct that the pump is bad.

Just so you don't feel like the Lone Ranger, click on the link below and you'll see some others with the same experience.
Somebody named Pete might say "they don't make 'em like they used to.
In the thread you can see the new vs old differences in the pictures.
You can't rebuild the new ones like you could the old ones.

I feel your pain. It sux but it does happen. If you turn wrenches long enough, you will install a "new" part that is bad from the start or will fail soon thereafter. This is the pump I put in my 1994. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/crt-m60389" rel="nofollow - LINK
If you want to change things up a bit, you can go with an electric fuel pump. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-712-801-1" rel="nofollow - LINK
You would also need a block-off plate where you remove the old mechanical unit. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pro-302-290" rel="nofollow - LINK

That's the same Carter that he had fail
I think it's a crap shoot as to whether you get a bad one or a good one.
Probably a lot more good ones that nobody ever complains about since they work and last a while too.

I recently had an old AC Dual Diaphragm rebuilt by Then and Now Automotive, as suggested by Gary S and others. I decided to do this after I purchased anew one and realized the low quality compared to the old one.
It took about 5 days from the time I mailed it until I got it back.

Replaced the fuel pump and we’re back in business. Thanks for the help!
