Every couple of years I am confused on what battery to buy for my 2004 SN 196. I know it should be a marine "starting" battery and not a deep cranking, correct? But since it has to be only 8 inches tall I always have difficulty finding one. Any and all thoughts and recommendations will be appreciated.

Marine starting battery is the right idea. I usually take my old battery to the store and buy the highest Cold Cranking Amps rated battery in the same size.
I just bought a 1000 CCA group 24 battery from Tractor Supply this past weekend. It is listed as 8.75" tall, might work for you?

Is Group 65 a marine battery? And...do I need a marine battery? We mainly ski in our "pond" but once in a while venture out on the "big" waters of Sandusky Bay to just hang out.

Really the only thing a "marine" battery get's you is studs besides the lugs and along with it a higher $$

Funny thing, after 15 years of enjoying my 2004, someone on either this forum or BOS, advised me to look at the underside of my battery box cover. There I found a sticker that said BCI Group #65. What does that mean? And my CC manual said 650 CCA minimum, 120 amp hours. So...what is that telling me? Size, marine battery, starting or deep cycle? Heading out today to purchase a battery, since this spring in Northern Ohio has been so bad we have only skied once.

You need a starting battery, not deep cycle. Marine doesn’t matter but as pointed out above if you get automotive you’ll need to buy the adapters that you clamp on the battery lugs that have the studs on them. Group is a definition of size. All Group 65 batteries have the same dimensions. So you need a group 65 battery with at least 650 CCA and 120 amp hours. That’s what will fit and what will work for starting the boat. You want either marine starting or just a regular automotive battery with stud adapters.
