Hello friends, I need to replace the battery in my SN 196 98 model and I am curious what other members are using in their boats of that era.. I currently have an Interstate Battery in the boat and its about 4yrs old - i am not sure if it is a starting battery, deep cycle, or hybird. It's been a good battery but sometimes has difficulty starting the boat especially if I run the radio with the engine off. I am looking for something that will reliably start the boat and i can run a standard marine head deck and 6x9's (no additional amps or anything like that) without concern. Let me know what you think!!! |

Check that your alternator is putting out correct voltage to charge the battery. Should measure 14v+ across the battery with the engine running. If the alt is OK, buy the battery with the highest CCA rating you can find. I run a 1000CCA in my 351-powered Mustang, it starts much better than the old 700CCA battery. If you plan to run the radio for hours with the engine off, carry a jumper pack (and make sure to bring it in the house once a week for charging). ------------- 1968 Mustang 16 - 351W powered |

Eric, I highly recommend against getting the highest CCA battery. I went through 2 1000 CCA's in about 3 years before I realized the problem. Hi , my names not Pete or Peter, but a Group 65 starting battery of your favorite brand not only works good but fits in the battery box too

Eric, I just happened to go shopping for a battery for the X55 last week. Not being up on the latest and greatest, I took a look at what Consumer Reports had to say. Different group sizes are reported differently so you need to be specific on the size. I needed a group 24 starting and ended up with a Napa battery. My names not Pete, Peter, or Petey but a group 34 fits the battery box perfect as well. With batteries is basically boils down to what name you want in your bilge. | I got a 750 CCA starting battery at WalMart for less than $100 and it lasted 7 years. Group 24 as specified in my owners manual for my 1997 SN. Despite popular belief they sell great batteries. |
