I bought a mallory uni lite distributor from Eric last week, and the gear on the bottom is in the opposite direction. The distributor is a really nice piece, billet aluminum and real shiny. Eric gave me a great deal on it and I was hoping I could just put my gear on the bottom to make the rotatation right, any chance this would work? I think this would be a better set up than an electronic conversion upgrade if there is any chance of making it work. Thanks in advance for any advice!!!!!

randy, is the gear the same ID as the other, the distributor itself wont recognize rotation. wait for more feedback from this post. try posting this in general discussion

Eric just by the eye it apeared to be the same, but i didn't do any actual measuring.

I would measure the shaft and make sure there the same O.D. if you can swap the gear it should work.

there are two things to check. 1) The diameter of the shaft, you need to remove the gear on both to measure them to see if they are the same within .003" of each other. 2) The location of the roll bin on the gear. Some times they are at different lengths from the end. Also pay attention to the dimple on the gear if it has one it should line up with the rotor tip.

79, he has a stock dist,i really am not sure if you can put the oe gear on that dist. I'll look in the summit catalog to see if they offer a opposite cut gear for that distributor tommorow. unless you know if that gear will work

If he checks what I said to check and they match up it's not an issue, The OE's gear's helix and diameter's are what works for the engine so that's not a concern, shaft diemeters and roll bin location are. For the most part they are standardized. Also if the diameter of the OE gear is a little smaller than the mallory unit it can be enlarged to work. Designed a dist or two in my day so I'm very convident it will work.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the dimple on the gear lineing up with the rotor tip, is this like an index mark of some sort ?

Yes it is an index or reference point when installing, It's not that important and you can always use the rotor when installing but they should line up. It will be on the smooth section of the gear and not on the helical part or actual gear section. The main thing is to measure the shaft diameters and the location of the roll pin, Otherwise the gear will fit loose on the shaft or too low preventing the base from seating out, or to high preventing the gear from being installed at all.
also when your driving out the roll pin don't drive it completely out of the gear go slow and drive out just enough that the gear slides off the shaft but is still in the gear. This makes a$$embly much easier, otherwise the roll pin can be hard to insert into the hole.

Not driving that roll pin out is the best tip I've heard in a long time. In an act of desperation I have had to grind a short taper on the end of the roll pin just to get it started (you do this when you have a lack of proper tools like when you have to drive the pin in using only a claw hammer, a pair of pliers, and a wood work bench with no vice. But I did have a grinder.)
