I have some play in my rudder and I'm thinking of repacking it.
I'm not sure of the correct size packing to use, its a 1996 SN
any help would be appreciated.

If it's not leaking and if it is you should just adjust the packing, repacking will not remove any rudder slop

Gary,
Rudder slop, good description, Its not a lot and my thoughts were repacking it
would snug it up. If that would not take the slop out what would ?

William,

Are you sure the slop is between the rudder shaft and port and not in the cable, helm and linage?

I have the boat on the trailer and the rudder can be moved both side to side and front to back, Not much maybe a 1/4 inch. I'm not sure if that is to much for a 23 year old boat ?

William,
Unless the port is allowing water into the boat, I don't feel you have a problem.

Thanks for the replys, I'm guessing that is normal wear for the years on the boat so I'll
just keep an eye on it .

Wouldn't hurt to verify there is grease in there so the wear stays as it is and doesn't accelerate

I had mine apart a few years ago to replace the prop shaft and get the strut back in line.
I am sorry but I don't remember the packing size, packing is cheap so buy both 3/16 and 1/4" so you have it on hand when or if you do this job.
I added a grease zerk to mine while it was apart.   Makes it easy to pump a little grease in to keep the shaft lubed. Although your note has me thinking it has now been 4 years since I added any grease.
