Hello, new guy here. I have a 1984 Ski Nautique. I have owned it for 6 years now and am finally ready to put in some type of speed control system.
The boat is used almost always to pull in a course and while it holds speed really well, for the sake of other drivers I am ready to make the leap. It's been a tough decision because the boat is 100% original.
I have looked at Perfect Pass but before I order a new system from them I was hoping to find some used parts instead.
If anyone can point me in the right direction or let me know what has worked well for them I would really, really appreciate it! And yes...I have looked on ski it again.
Thanks in advance for any advice. It's been quite awhile since I last paid attention to this site but know there is a wealth of knowledge here. It's how I found the boat in the first place!
Joel

SIA and eBay is your best bet. On a website like this we have a tendency to hold onto spare PP bc we know what we have. Sometimes on Ball of Spray if you post a wanted thread a generous person might cough up a part as most of those guys ski ZO and won’t ever go back.

I did a bit of a similar search a month or so ago, trying to avoid retail for new PP/stargazer. Searched around, including an inquiry over at BOS. Jody Seal offered me one from 2004, I believe, for only $200. It was a single line variety. PP would no longer support that old a unit, so I passed, but if you feel like taking the risk, I would bet he still has it.

Thanks for the replies so far. Kind of confirms what I was thinking....second hand units are hard to come by.

Larry has a valid point. The single lines will fail at some point and equate to nearly a complete new system from PP.

So it's looking like my best bet is just to pony up and buy a new system. The boat is solid, I really don't plan on replacing it. Owned it long enough now to feel confident with it. My hesitation has been putting over $1,000 dollars into a boat that's worth maybe $4,000 to $5,000.

Yeah worth $5k but IMHO to make the next step up is a $10k boat. So putting 1400$ in a $5k boat you know and are happy and confident with and is paid for seems to make most sense. That $1400 is really saving you $4600k.

Orlando76 that is the debate I have had for the last year. I think what you say makes the most sense to me since I love the boat and love skiing behind it..
Really appreciate the input and advise.

Larry, can you enlighten me on this, my 05' has the factory installed PP with a single line display, thought of updating to multi line however it's not been a big enough priority. I know several people (believe Greg F being one of them) who have updated to the multi line without issue.
So I guess my question is, are they saying they no longer support the gauge or the entire system of that era?

Single line gauge is no longer available and the little brain box that’s compatible with the single line gauge NLA. Servo motor and harness never changed.

Hydrophase still makes their basic system. It does not save you that much though:

My 85 is on its second single single line gauge since prior owner first installed it. Seems due to quit based on the life of the first one.

My '99 had a single-line display that I replaced with a StarGazer unit. Plug and Play.

I’ve done 4 perfect pass installs and stargazer is an amazing product. It is also a premium product and doesn’t always make sense as we have seen.
*clears throat* I DO NOT NECESSARILY ENDORSE THE FOLLOWING. IT IS MERELY SHARING THE INFO:
There’s a new company on the scene called “steadypass.”
They sell a gps speed control system for $450.
The drawback: the servo they offer (you can buy without) is not marine rated. It is in a sealed plastic pvc tube however. The servo is a brushed stepper motor with low current draw. Is it 100% safe.... nothing is.
(Will I be ordering one? Absolutely.)

Wow. I have never heard or either hydrophase or steadypass.. Just did a quick glance and I like both of those as options. I will do a little more research on them. As far as hydrophase a couple hundred bucks is still a couple hundred bucks. But it looks like the steadypass is half the price. That really got my attention especially when I am looking at putting it in a 36 year old ski boat. Thank you beretta5spd and rebelskier

Hydrophase has been around for a long time but has not properly marketed themselves. They are not a new company.
Speed control is really nice.

Wanted to get back in here an give a quick update on my decision. After doing some research I decided to go with the Steady Pass. For about half the price of the other available units I figured I would give it a shot.
The install wasn't too tough, I am not very mechanical and I was able to figure it out. Finally skied behind it Wednesday night, through the course and I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. Held the speed exceptionally well.
Just wanted to thank you guys on this forum for your advice and guidance. I never would have found this product if it wasn't for all of you!
