So apparently I bought the wrong starter for my boat. Thanks to this site I was able to get a parts manual for the engine in my boat (MIE 198 R). Unfortunately that made me feel like I didn't need to ask for help when going to purchase a new starter. My engine is reverse rotation and turns counter clockwise. The new starter which according to the parts manual is LH rotation turns my motor clockwise.
Any help on what I may be doing wrong is greatly appreciated also any help tracking down a new starter for a mercruiser 198 R would be greatly appreciated.
And lastly if this is the wrong starter and anybody needs a starter part#50-808011A05 I will make you a smokin good deal.

Engine rotation is denoted LH and RH and in the marine world is referenced from the rear. (Rev rotation = RH). Starter rotation is usually denoted as CW and CCW, which is descriptive of the starter rotation itself (not the engine it is installed on) and is referenced from the business end (nose cone). Starter and flywheel rotation will be opposite. Whether you have a top mount (nose cone facing forward) or bottom mount (nose cone facing aft) will determine what you need as well.
The merc 198 is a Chevy 305 if I’m not mistaken. You’ll have a RH engine in the boat. If utilizing a top mount starter then it’ll need to be CW.
If I’m reading the google correctly that 50-808011A05 is a CCW. I have some lefty 454’s that would use it- pm me.

If you want a brand and part number................Arco 30456 will work for you since you have a top mount rear entry starter in your boat.
Shopping around will get you a variety of prices
Here's one example in the link

Bradley, What did they tell you? New starter?

Bradley, As Ken mentioned, take the starter into an auto-electric shop for testing. There's a good chance that all it needs is a commutator clean up, possible brushes and bushings. In fact, you can do it yourself if inclined. |

I ended up pulling the starter off to check it myself. When I would turn the key they starter gear would extended but not turn. I figured I would disassemble it and see if I could fix it when I get time.

Bradley, The "Bendix" extends because the solenoid (small round thing on top of the starter) pushes it out. The starter not turning could be a burnt out armature or field I don't feel that's likely. So, more likely:

With rebuilt replacement options under $100 I’m not sure I’d be bringing it in anywhere, at least around here. The last one I checked needed $6 worth of brushes and $200 in labor apparently. SMH.
