My fuel gauge is a accurate to about a half a tank. Needle bounces around like mad if it’s not totally full.

Is there a reasonable fix for this, or is this a boating inevitability? Seems like every boat I’ve had is the same but it’s getting annoying not knowing how much fuel I have.

Tyler,
Go with a high end linear https://www.wholesalemarine.com/moeller-reed-switch-fuel-sending-unit-79135.html" rel="nofollow - sender There very nature snubs rapid movement.

Tyler,
Sorry but I don't know the length needed. If you don't get a response, then you'll need to measure your tank.

I installed a Kus sender last fall - similar to the Moeller unit that Pete posted, but only about $50 on ebay. Read the instructions before you order a sender: If you're installing in a metal tank it should be 1/2-1" shorter than the tank depth, a plastic tank will need more clearance.

Thanks I'll check that out too!

Could you explain what you mean by snubbing rapid movement? I have a reed switch sender in my boat and don't feel that it resists fuel sloshing any better than the factory style sender

Isaac,
From the Moeller description:

"Reed switch sending units collect fuel level information more consistently than swingarm senders. They achieve this by taking the measurement from the float - which is still a moving part. However, the fluctuation is much less because the range of motion is much less."

Another:
Moeller Marine Reed switch fuel level senders dramatically reduce "slosh fluctuations" which are inherent with swingarm units. "

Did you use a Moeller brand?

No, I'm using a Wema sender. I don't think it's a bad unit by any means, but the gauge definitely twitches between different fuel levels (due to the low resolution of the reeds) when the boat is moving.

Yeah mine usually sits around 1/2, and twitches between empty and full. Basically useless.

Isaac,
The "twitch" between levels should still give you an idea of how much is in the tank.

It does, and I would consider it to be a perfectly functional fuel level indication. I just don't feel that they do much to dampen rapid fluctuations.

Does anyone know the standard/typical shaft length for a 1983 Ski Nautique with a metal tank? It has the original swingarm style sending unit. At key on, gauge pegs full when a jumper is placed between the ground and the sending unit wire, otherwise, it's a random level generator. I can pull the tank and check but I thought I would ask in case someone has the length handy.

Anyone have any experience with Tanks Inc. floatless senders?

https://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=346/category_id=184/mode=prod/prd346.htm" rel="nofollow - Tanks Inc. sender

I was shopping for a 0 to 30 Ohm sender for my X55 and ran into it. I wonder how well it solves the gauge "twitch" problem?
