Has anyone made the top of their doghouse separately openable? I'm thinking that it would make engine inspection much more frequent, and troubleshooting easier. I'd still make the doghouse flip as a whole, but would add hinges to to the front of the top plate, and a clamp at the back.

Is there a downside? I have to build it from scratch, so the fab is awash either way.

Also, what is used for sound insulation on the old boats. My 67 riviera was gutted(no furniture at all) when I got it. I have some classic photos, so I know what it is supposed to look like, but I don't have any of the details.

My plan is to use 2" of mineral wool insulation, retained with fiberglass cloth, on the inner surface, and foam/vinyl on the outside.   Is that overkill.

Also, the classic photos have a vent on the top of the back of the doghouse. Is it necessary?

My 2001 model year has a 2-piece engine cover. I believe that started in 1997. If you are handy with upholstery it should be do-able. I would ensure that the bottom piece has sufficient structural rigidity.

Thanks!

What is used for insulation?

The only "insulation" on those wooden motorbox's was the foam padding under the vinyl . You could use some of the more modern foil faced dense foam sound insulation like Dynamat

I have never understood the clamshell motorboxes. Other than a quick check for a drippy carb or fumes, the full box has to lift up. The upper clamshell is pretty useless imho. You can’t see or access much at all- not even the drain plug. I wouldn’t bother adding it.

I agree with Tim. My 04 has it and I never use it.
