Hope everyone had a great 4th of July...now we get into the meat of the summer! I want to change my transmission fluid. It is a new to me boat and I have put 50 hours on it over the past 2 years and I have not changed it. 1999 SN 285 hp carbureted , 1:23 to 1 transmission. What is the best way to do this? I have seen people say don’t change it, only change half, change it cold not hot...

I would appreciate a little step by step guidance!

2 quarts capacity. Dextron III. Use a vacuum fluids extractor. Just don’t get the hose caught and stuck. You should be able to suck out 2 quarts. Replace what you removed.

Read the link below and if you get anything stuck in the transmission, just hang your head in shame since you were forewarned

Quite a few people have gotten plastic tubing stuck while doing this job, you don't want to add yourself to the list

Pretty simple process--

Remove the dipstick--pump out the old into a secondary container---I usually use an old yogurt or cottage cheese container and measure out what I remove--which is right at 2qts
.
I use this high tech extractor pump---a plastic pump from a head and shoulders bottle--it fits perfectly to the bottom of the dipstick tube and will not break off



I use this type of fluid, I get it at dollar general for $4.50/qt

I used my pneumatic brake bleeder from Harbor Freight, I just popped of the end that goes on the bleeder and put the hose in the transmission, hooked up the air and pulled the trigger. It was all contained in the bottle, no mess.

I'd advise to NOT use an extractor pump with plastic hose that goes into the transmission. It can get stuck, AND we've seen it on here several times, where guys have broken off a piece in the transmssion..NOT GOOD.

I suggest hooking up a piece of 1/4" copper tubing that will go down into the tranny. Works much better, and peace of mind knowing piece wont break off.

I believe it has been mentioned before but removing the fluid line off the cooler and then connecting a vacuum extractor up to it will get almost all of the fluid out. The line you what to use is the one that connects to the bottom of the trans. No stuck tubes down the dip stick hole!!

! I’m paranoid now about the plastic In the tranny...I think I will get some copper tubing....what
do the sell it at the big box stores or ace hardware?

I do have a vacuum extractor.... does someone have a schematic of the tranny? I would like to make sure I hook it up properly...where would hook the vacuum line up?

I had an old car fuel pump laying around that made the job very easy... if you don't have one, you could probably get one on ebay for $10. just hook it up to a spare battery/jumper box. I felt by not monkeying with a hand pump I was less likely to get the tube stuck in there... seemed to work pretty well. With the pump and everything set up... you can use both hands to guide and direct the tube into the trans like a surgeon.

I did it twice in 8 years... both times I pulled 2qts out. I will say, simply looking at the color of the old fluid compared to the new... hardly even noticeable. I too have heard it isn't necessary. I am up on my 4 year interval and wondering if I should even waste my time...
