Valley Propeller Service Bryan 805.644.5055 Ventura, CA New Prop Sales, Computer Repairs, Inboard, Outboard, Sterndrive One of the members of our club (skis Big Dawg tourneys) recommended this place. Several of our members have used him. He is very knowledgeable and will work with you to find the best prop. One of my ski buddies who has a MC called him. Bryan had him provide speeds at certain RPMs, then recommended a 3-blade over his current 4-blade. He tried it and it the wake was as good or better than the 4-blade, and the RPMs were just where they wanted them. I believe it was an ACME prop. He also uses CNC for repairs. Better hole-shot and lower RPMs are typically somewhat mutually exclusive. For better hole-shot, most would look to a lower pitched prop — thus enabling the engine RPMs to climb faster into the “power band”. The lower or shorter pitch would translate into higher engine RPMs at a constant speed. Now, if your “base” prop was a non-CNC and poorly tuned or repaired, then you may be able to increase hole-shot amp RPMs concurrently. It didn't make a lot of sense to me either; I know Bryan from Valley Prop is a big proponent of 3 blade over 4 blade. My buddy's MC had a 4 blade, and he got improved hole shot but lower RPMs on the higher end. Speeds were recorded at various RPMs (using PP RPM mode) on the old prop, and when my buddy got the new prop from Bryan and did the same tests over again, the hole shot was better (higher speed at specific RPMs on the low end), and lower RPMs on the higher end (30-36mph range). ------------- Gordon '97 Ski Nautique, GT40 |

What he got was a somewhat stronger pull when pulling heavier skiers out of the water, and somewhat lower RPMs at 34.2 and 36mph than his 4-blade. He did lose 1-2mph on WOT, but on a tournament ski boat (slalom only) that never goes over 36, top end speed is not much of a concern. ------------- Gordon '97 Ski Nautique, GT40 |

Why is it a better prop than a 4 blade (ACME 422)? I like everything that my buddy's ACME 431 for his MC did; would love the same for my boat, but leery about what it would do to my wake vs the stock 4-blade. If it will make it softer, I'd go for it. My '96 had a 3-blade, and I tried a 4 blade twice at two different times and everyone thought the 3 blade was softer, so I stuck with it. But the '97 and newer all have 4-blade. I don't know that there is anyone that is going to let me try and buy a ACME540; if I don't like it, I get to return it for a refund. ------------- Gordon '97 Ski Nautique, GT40 |

Size and style of prop are more important than blade count. Often your choices are somewhat limited amongst all those criteria. Blade count will have less of an effect on proper rpm and resulting speed than the other design considerations. You are comparing prop models for 1:1 and 1.23:1 boats (varying by 3”+ pitch), they are apples and oranges. Would suggest a bit more learning before selecting one. |

Yep 540 for the '86 2001 SN I ran a 1442 3 blade on my '95 SN GT-40 and now running it on my 2000 Sport and it gets the job done nicely slalom, wake-boarding and surfing.
