Was out this morning and just felt that, compared to recent performance, the hole shot was weak. PCM 351w sounds fine, performance on plane seemed normal. Honestly seemed completely fine except just felt like I had crappy power pulling the skier out of the water compared to the last time I went out.
Most of the threads on this focus on prop. I have a 4 blade prop that I’ve had since last season and nothings changed there so let’s assume that’s not it.
I did change the trans fluid between outings. I put in 2 quarts of dex/merc after sucking out about the same... although found a bit of trans fluid in the bilge so it may have overfilled. Not sure if that’s an issue.
Changed my fuel filter at the end of last season like always and always fill with no ethanol fuel.
Plugs and wires are all fairly new (<30 hours).
I haven’t done timing / cap / etc and have no idea how honestly.
Thoughts?

Sounds like a carby issue to me. Could be a ruptured accelerator pump diaphragm. I certainly would check the timing. Your boat is a 1993 correct? ProTec?

Thanks - just been reading up on that, I don't know much at all about carbs. Accelerator pump diaphragm seems like it could be the issue, although I want to point out the boat doesn't stumble or bog down or anything. It just feels like I've got 10 people on board (instead of 3) and it's taking it's sweet time to get the skier out of the water and accelerating.
One thing I did notice when in the water behind the boat today is I could smell (Faintly) gasoline from the exhaust. No odors in the engine bay, just right at the exhaust outlet. I'm assuming that points to the carb running too rich?
Also I just checked and when I had a service done last year (blown head gasket... thanks previous owner) the mechanic did check / adjust timing. The boat starts up cold / hot perfectly and is super smooth otherwise, so I'm just not totally sure it's the carb, and wouldn't make sense for it to be the distributor cap since it's not missing at all.
Think I'm going to try a new spin on fuel filter too since that's cheap / easy.

Any chance you have gotten water into the bilge foam?

Don’t think so but how would I know? Boat rides at normal height, platform is well above waterline. Boat lives in my carport and doesn’t see rain Almost ever.

Tell us about the engine. Based on your signature block, your boat is a 1993. Above I asked about "ProTec". Does the engine have the ProTec management system? If so, ProTec could be part of the problem.

Last time he had issues and got asked the Protec/distributor question he didn't exactly answer the question for sure but he thinks it's a distributor.

Carb'd yes but what about the ignition system? Early Protec's were ignition only.

I might be wondering about the other head gasket that didn't get replaced after your last lack of power on takeoff issue, which would then make me want to do a compression test, which would probably make me stop wondering after seeing the results

Yeah at that point I’d had the boat for less than a season and knew even less. Turned out I’d had a blown head gasket, likely related to the previous owners abuse.
BTW I was out yesterday and it seemed better. I had cleaned out the screen on the fuel line at the carb as well as the flame arrestor, and added new fuel to the tank and conditions were less muggy. Still think I’m missing a bit of power compared to usual though. Think I’ll get a timing light and double check that although seems weird that the timing would be off after it was just tuned last year.

I figure that if you check all 8, you'll have some good info.
We'll hope for good results

Actually, timing off after if was tuned make perfect sense in our experience

Oh interesting... well I've got a timing light on order too so we'll see. I've gotta say the motor runs really well overall, wouldn't you expect more than just mildly sluggish acceleration if the timing was off? I'm thinking misfires, stumbles, vibrations etc.

After setting / checking the timing, make sure that the mechanical advance in the dizzy works properly. It wouldn’t be the first time that performance suffers due to a dizzy that doesn’t advance the spark properly.

Makes sense although I’m going to have to research how to do that. I assume that’s a new distiributor if that’s the issue?

It's under the points plate in the distributor. There are a couple cam pivots and slots that rust up. Don't worry about the loose spring. That's normal.

Just to follow up on this. Checked timing today on the trailer (let it warm up first on the hose). Idle is dialed in right at 10 BTDC. However advance seems to max out at 26-28 BTDC or so. So I suppose I’m not getting quite enough advance timing correct? Seems smooth, not erratic. But not the 34 or so I was expecting. Using timing tape so I think it’s fairly accurate.

Tyler, Did you get a chance to clean up and lubricate the advance mechanism?

I did not... pulled off the dizzy cap and immediately had no idea what I was looking at, so put it back and figured I should do some more reading first. Really don't want to screw this up, especially since we need the boat running next week (and right now it runs generally well).
Any good resources on how to do this?

Lol - I’m not afraid to start doing some wrenching (or micro wrenching as this appears to be) but yeah not without having some clue. Doing some YouTubing first. Boat runs decently well and we have a dedicated week on the lake next week so I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot at least until that’s over.
