I purchased the linear fuel sender from CorrectCraft Parts (12 "). Any one know if you can get the old one out and put the new on ein without removing the tank (or the filler hose)? That filler hose seems like a bxxch to remove, so I'm wondering if there's a way to get the original one out. Your title says ‘79 but your signature block says ‘97. Dyslexia is a condition horrible. Now, assuming a 1997 SN, you can remove the rear seat and gain access the rear of the “bubble-butt”. It can be a P-I-T-A to remove the tank, but there is not much room back there to work with the tank in place. Your “call” if you can do the work in the confined space. In my 1994 I bit the bullet and removed the tank first. The biggest pain was the stiff hose connections and getting all the fuel out first. JQ

I just did this to my 84 and assuming it’s similar to the 79, once you completely remove the gas filler and the platform bolts on its side holding her in place, it’s not that bad removing the tank entirely. Since I did this, I went ahead and replaced all fuel, exhaust & filler hoses along with anti siphon valve and exhaust hoses. The original poster's question wasn't answered. Can you remove the fuel tank sender without removing the fuel tank? My interest is with a 1984 Ski Nautique 2001. I'm putting a reed switch sender and I believe a 11" device is correct. Thanks in advance.

OldSchoolBlue84 in the post right above yours took his out of his 84 to do it, maybe because he wanted to or because he had to and in the thread in the link below GunDriver says No about an 88. He has an 85 so his No answer is probably based on that. Both of them are still floating around here, so maybe they'll see your question
http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15275&title=fuel-tank-sending-unit" rel="nofollow - link People have removed the float arm units by bending them as they pull them out and then put i the newer style with a tight fit getting it installed on various different years, but you'll have to hope somebody posts that they tried this on their mid 80s SN......or give it a shot  Some of those 37 year old lines back there might be due for replacement anyways if you pull it.

Reasoning.....I have changed the sender twice on my 84. First one was the original arm style which I did not remove the tank, just bend it slightly to install, but It was tight. The 2nd sender, by choice, was the rod style sender which I selected to removed the tank and since I was back there decided to replace all fuel hoses, filler hoses, vent hoses, exhaust fan hoses, gas filler hardware, vent hardware and anti-siphon valve. Now removing the vent option seems legit.
