So, it's started...

1. The drain nipple on bottom of HPFP canister cracked and leaking. O-ring also shot.

2. While not yet confirmed, it is possible the spark plugs are original.

3. The shaft coupling did NOT want to leave the transmission flange. Likely had never been apart.

4. It's not been determined if the coupling will leave the shaft without the sawzall.

5. We're going to replace all the fuel lines and install an anti-siphon valve.

Steady as she goes....

So you have around 600 or so hours on your plugs.....they're just spring chickens.

No matter which thumb rule you use about boat engine hours vs miles on a car, somebody like Pete would say those things are good for at least another 25 years or so. Wink

Unleaded fuel, fuel injection and electronic ignition all  tend to make plugs last a while.

I guess you bought the boat from one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it guys"

You’re exactly right. The boat came up from NC 5 years ago when the second owner bought it. Only 25 hours from that point to my purchase. So, the boat sat quite a bit.

Classic case of misalignment eating the cutlass.

Looking aft. Shaft not centered in strut.

After shaft removal. Not much left of existing cutlass.

I susspect the strut is bent. How's the shaft?

Will report back on that one. Visually, the strut looked ok. What's the best method to check? So, that shaft is spec’d for a specific angle from the trans flange. If we loose-fit the shaft at the correct angle, we should be centered in the strut.

If the shaft is centered in the log but not in the strut bore, then the strut is ether bent or misaligned on the hull. Also you can get a measurement from each side at the chine to the center of the strut.

It was the strut. Once installed, all aligned perfectly from the trans coupling aft.
