| With very good maintenance how many hours should I expect to get out of my 1993 ProBoss 351? I now have 1060 hours on her and have 140 psi on all cylinders. Has GT40 heads and DUI distributor and Holly carb. Use 15-40 Rotella and change frequently. It is running fantastic. What is the expected longevity? Any specific preventive maintenance? |

| I have a good friend with a 1998 Malibu who has accumulated 4,500 trouble free hours on his boat. Regular oil changes every 50 hours, plugs, distributor cap and rotor, fuel pumps,etc. Many are afraid of high hours but the key is frequent preventative maintenance. He uses the boat 7 days/week in season here in SC. No major repairs and he has owned it since new. |

Assume that a car with 100,000 miles has an average speed of 35 mph over that mileage. That equates to approximately 2,900 engine hours. Most would say that 100,000 miles is not that much in a car...and I agree. I realize car engines run at a lower rpm range typically, so assume that the marine engine hours are 2X compared to a car. As such, I expect that a properly maintained, marinized, modern V8 engine should be able to reach 2,500 to 3,000+ hours (equivalent to 200K in a car). A member of our ski club just rebuilt his Ski Centurion with a 350 SBC that had over 3,000 hours. JQ

| 100k on a car is nothing. I ran my last Audi A6 twin-turbo V6 to more than twice that.. and I DROVE it. So, Jonny says that equates to 6000 hours. You'll see degradation in the top end via annual compression checks. If you're getting more than a couple jugs dropping off, Top the motor, and keep on trucking. |

| In all fairness, for those of us that are using our DD boats exclusively on the course, we do work them harder. Plenty of temp changes inside the block and top end in between sets. It will take a toll over the years, comparatively speaking, to running a couple hundred K on a car in mostly highway miles, like my old Audi.... |

She may be slow but she'll get you there  The hard part was getting the camera behind the steering wheel while doing 79mph on I-79 south so you won't be late for work.

| I’m not hearing about timing chain issues on these boats. I suspect they last forever because they don’t see the load unload changes from gear shifts like auto engines do. Pure speculation there. |

Hi, I am also curious about this lasting / hour question. has anyone read a professional study any link? these ford industrial engines should have been studied by at least one engineer somewhere.?? i asked a professional fisherman/ guide about his boat , when he replaced motors & after how many hours. he said after 5k reliability of the outboards he used became questionable and he swapped boats after 5k hours. now he started the engines and never shut them off during our trip also we were in salt water so.? My speculation is how often we use the boat vs (it setting for 2-3 years with no use) and of course how well / often we maintain the engine may be more important than how hard we run it.
