Hey all, Looking for Ideas. 454 with edelbrock carb. It fires but won’t stay running. Cough, spits and carb catches fire once or twice. When you look into carb it seems like it’s getting to much gas. I’m wondering if the angles on the carb floats is wrong. The carb came off a merc cruiser in board out board.
Need ideas. Help
Ty

I should have said it’s a 83 barefoot Naugtique

A couple of questions:

1. How was the engine running before the "new" Edelbrock carb?
2. Have you verified ignition timing?
3. Was the carb running well before pulling from the I/O?
4. When you pulled the carb from the I/O did you do a re-build on it?
5. New base gaskets?

Your '83 certainly has an down angle on the engine mounting, and that can be problematic for certain carbs.  Are you using a wedge spacer?

1) engine is a newly re man.
2) will check timing
3) I bought the carb off Craigslist.
4) has a new base gasket. I also rebuilt the carb.
5) does have the wedge spacer installed.

Update today.
Checked timing and it started.
Now it runs for a min and dies. Then restarts for a min and dies. Over and over.
Choke is open. When it’s running it’s smooth.

Sounds like a fuel supply issue or carb float bowl issue. I’m not an Edelbrock guy so I can’t provide much help troubleshooting the carb.  I believe KENO has good knowledge and experience there and hopefully he will jump in and give you good advice.

I think what JQ says about fuel supply sounds good.

When it quits, is the carburetor out of gas? If you're not sure, pump the throttle and see if the accelerator pump is giving a good squirt of gas down the primaries.

The Edelbrock/Carter/Webers like to be pretty level. There's a Chrysler marine 8 degree phenolic wedge that works good to get it pretty level that's still available.

What do you have for a wedge now?
