I'm contemplating the purchase of a 2008 SN 196 . Will be giving it a oil change if it hasn't been done and I'm wondering recommended oil & filter for this engine.I'm running a GT 40 now and using valvoline straight 40 WT synthetic racing oil and a FL1a filter ,I'm thinking the PCM on the 2008 is different specs. Thank you for info on this.Smile

The oil and filter are engine-specific.  For 2008, I believe that there were 3 options for the 196:

5.0 Liter V-8 (275 hp)
5.7 Liter V-8 (330 hp)
6.0 Liter ZR6 (375 hp)

The 5.7 Excalibur was very popular and many boats came with that power plant.  Do you know what engine is in the boat?

Here's a link to a PCM manual for 2008

http://www.planetnautique.com/CorrectCraftManuals/2008/2008pcm.pdf" rel="nofollow - link

It has oil specs on page 28 and it also lists an oil filter part number on page 55.

I wouldn't throw out any extra FL-1A filters you might have Wink

It calls for 15 W 40 which seems to be an odd weight and seems a lot of diesels run that WT. I have been running straight Valvoline VR1 40 WT in my GT 40. Would this work in the Chevy PCM engine ?,I'm not sure what size engine is in the boat as I'm still negoatating from a distance and waiting for more info. May be driving from Vermont to Long Island if my fever continues on this boat LOL.  Thank You

Don’t rely on your owner’s manual, PCM issued new oil specifications for their motors. Including the GT40, no longer straight SAE 40!
