I am getting 14 volts from alternator but not at the battery. Cut out relay or voltage regulator?  Not too familiar with either of those. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I think the video in the link will help you decide. Same basic setup as yours

You might need Pete's point file Wink

Bill,
Charlie's 318 did the same this spring. He cleaned up the contact points and that fixed his issue.

He also bought a backup just incase:

I went to my extra parts bin this morning and found the one that came with old Southwind donor boat. I’ll try to sand the points on the on I have been using and see if that fixes it.

So I got the belt sander ready to sand the points......where exactly should I start?LOL

Then I tried taking Pete's advice and still could not find the exact place to file or sand!

I did put on the old style one that I had in the parts bin.  It seems to charge but needs much higher rpms to kick in.

Well that one looks new fangled and electronic, not quite as new fangled as the one Pete posted a link to though

Is the old one mechanical or does it have all those electronic gizmos in it too?

Maybe the belt sander will work on that one Wink

Bill,
You have the newer solid state style. No contact points to clean up.

Let's see, so far you.ve posted a link to a voltage regulator that has 3 wire connections and one that has 1 wire connection and Bill's has 2

Keep trying and maybe you'll find the right replacement Pete Wink

The other one I put in is old style. Like the one in the YouTube video.  Only one coil in mine tho.

The second choice Pete linked may work if the wire is for the field and the nut on top is for the other wire.

I'd take my chances with one of these in the link below as a guess not knowing the alternator and regulator part numbers.

It's an electronic replacement for the point style regulator and cutout relay and probably looks a whole lot like yours.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/264541512835?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1DGd8jymqQY2HqfVbD-6--g36&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=264541512835&targetid=1262375642056&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9002379&poi=&campaignid=12873834712&mkgroupid=117462212370&rlsatarget=pla-1262375642056&abcId=9300536&merchantid=427094425&gclid=CjwKCAjw3riIBhAwEiwAzD3TiUzlloF2TiUrajPwFlEMILUcm61R--EaPQcEAxUrKO9KgDLsTwdN9BoC1koQAvD_BwE" rel="nofollow - link

One terminal gets ignition power, the other goes to the alternator field.

Notice the "original look" for Pete's sake Wink

Or, here's a mechanical aftermarket version of the regulator in this link that would be wired the same

Good thing I ordered the new regulator. Who knew the one I had in the parts bin from the 1969 south wind would only last a week! 😉
