Brother and I bought '65 CC Barracuda that we thought would be cool to restore. Allegedly good to go except missing engine. Mostly original parts and needs some paint, polish, & upholstery.
Okay, embarra$$ed to admit it, but we picked up and rebuilt a 302 ford (out of a '72 Ford Mustang) to drop in said Barracuda, and am now becoming aware of reverse rotation and special reservoir-forward oil pan(to account for considerable engine angle) .
So anyways, how do we verify rotation, get proper oil pan and if rotation is wrong on our engine, where do we look for 302 Ford w/ proper specs????

Your boat originally came with reverse rotation engine, If you built one from a 1972 ford and didnt change crank shaft, piston direction, etc then you now have a standard rotation engine so now your prop will turn the wrong direction once you get it to turn by indexing the transmission pump that is,
anyway I say whats done is done in terms of rotation, index the transmission, get a LH prop, and go boating. Don't be too embarra$$ed could happen to anyone BCCFC (Before Correct Craft Fan.Com)
Whats this about a reservoir-forward oil pan? The old interceptor ford 302s utilzied a pretty large Oil pan but the reservoir is in the back and they will work fine, yours probably will as well. Take a picture of it for us. You would not want a foward sump pan.

Thanks for the feedback. In my haste to post I may have misinterpreted what my brother said about oil pan(fwd vs. rear sump).
Also haven't really studied the boat and engine in months, but we intend to make progress on restoration after hunting season.

I think the 'van pans' are forward sump.

This is my first time on this forum, have owned CC for 30 years. I am swaping my 84 seized 351 for a 1974 302 out of a Penn Yann. My 302 goes the wrong way and have been reading about this indexing the transmission pump thing on other forums that cures this problem, could someone please tell me a little more about this procedure?
Thanks Dino

Two things need to be done when placing an engine of a different rotation than the current one into a boat with velvet drive 1:1 transmission. The first is to index the hydralic pump that provides pressure to the clutch plates so that it creates pressure when turning in the new direction. The pump is located in the front of the transmission surrounding the input shaft. If you look closely you will see there are two direcional arrows one for standard and one for reverse rotation on the transmission, as well as a mark on the pump that will be aligned with one of the two on the transmission. You simply remove the bolts holding on the pump turn it to align the other mark and then reinstall the bolts.
The second thing that will be needed is a new propellor that turns opposite of the one you currently have. Once those two things are done you can go forward in forward and all is well.

the starter, and dist are not interchangable from rev to standard rotations as well as some circulation pumps. They are interchangable from 351 to 302 but not when comparing engine rotation. Everything is interchangable with the exception of the oil pan and intake manifold from a 351 to 302 provided that the engine rotation does not come into play.
Also you will have to flip the RWP 180 as well you can not just change the impeller it's non-directional.

Be very careful if you swap oil pans with different location sumps.you will have to change the oil pump pickup if you do this, and it may require a different main cap bolt to support the pick up tube in its new location.I have seen this done incorrectly and starve the engine for oil.Make sure you get ALL the necessary parts if you go that route, not just the pan & pickup

Thanks and I might just luck out and have the 302 be reverse like my 351, is there an easy way to tell if the 302 is reverse without starting it up ?
Thanks Dino

Turn the front damper with a breaker bar CCW, if it sucks where it should and blows where it should, its reverse, else it aint.
Don't forget your mismatched vintage engines will have different external balance, so don't go swaping flywheels.

IMHO, for what it's worth - I would sell the auto engine, take the money and apply it to a reverse rotation marine engine. I think you are otherwise facing too many problems... IMHO
In fact, to keep everything in order and have the motor mounts line up with the original holes I think you should look for a 318 (same block as the original 273) chrysler - that's what came in the Baracuda - am I right? But that's just me.

you can look at the harmonic balancer as well to determind rotation some while indicate before and after on them.

A '65 Barracuda most likely came with an early polyhead M318.
