I have a mysterious electrical issue I have been trying to figure out and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for some HELP!!!! I have a 76 Ski Nautique with a 351W and have been having an overheating wire issue on the key switch fuse holder? It starts out fine but after about 2 hours on the water, the fuse holder and wires attached are hot tot he touch? I previously had to replace the wires after they overheated and melted together? I have recently replaced the starter solenoid which I believe is when this issue began?

Mike,
Check the connections (terminals) behind the dash primarily at the fuse holder and ignition switch. Sounds like a bad connection causing resistance and then heat. The .250 quick connect tabs are nortorious for corroding and also getting loose over the years.

Where do those wires go to or come from?

Do you have an ammeter in the boat? A 76 had the ammeter from the factory.

If you do, I think you'll find that one wire goes back to the solenoid that you replaced and hooks to the big lug that the cable from the battery hooks to and that all the battery charging current goes thru that wire I'd check the ring terminal and condition of the wire where it hooks to the solenoid. (circled in Red)

What's the ammeter read when you're driving for those couple of hours?

Since you did replace the solenoid and think that's when the problem started, it's a good place to begin to look. Wink

The early PCM diagram doesn't show the fuses on the dash, but you would have a 20 amp fuse in the red wire between the key and the solenoid.

Pretty much any load drawing excess current can cause that wire to heat up
