Hello everyone. I have a 1978 Correct Craft Mustang. My trailer was custom made probably when the boat was built. It’s in great condition but but makes launching the boat painful. It’s very high off of the pavement and has almost no tongue. Really short. Consequently you get soaked at every launch, and so does the launch vehicle. So I’m looking for suggestions on purchasing a new trailer. Any suggestions? Thank you. ------------- A Daily |

Anthony, Posting a picture of the trailer may help us. It may be a CC trailer as they did have a tendency to look homemade! Is it a drive on trailer? Mine has no resemblance what so ever. I had to weigh it in order to register it in NY. 690 lbs. you would think the builder thought the boat weighed 5,000 pounds. It’s very well built and super heavy duty. Which is nice but it’s simply too tall. ------------- A Daily |

Boat Mate in Tennessee has made a few customer Mustang Trailers for a member here on this site named Reid Pinkham who lives in North Carolina ( Lake Norman). He went all out with several nice options and they came out great. What I am trying to say, is Boat Mate has the pattern for a new mustang trailer. However, his mustangs were of the 70-72 flavor. I believe the hulls for the 1978's might be larger. It is worth looking into. Well, Adaily sent me some pictures of his trailer but they are in an msg file that the site doesn't like so I can't put them here. If anybody knows what to do to get them on here, ley me know and I can e mail them to you for posting. Why am I thinking of somebody named mpost or 75 tique right now? I'm sure there are plenty of others that could help too.It's pretty much a trailer somebody built and loosely patterned after a CC wishbone trailer and at 34 inches off the ground, it's not a whole lot taller than a #3 cc trailer. It has a short tongue that could probably be lenfthened to help with his launch issues.

My first thought is to put a drop axel on the trailer. The only mods to the trailer would be raising the fenders. Launch Load. It's not pretty. I have to back the trailer deep enough into the water in order for the boat to float off. I'm in so deep that the exhaust on my SUV are under water. It's not great for the car or me. The trailer fenders are about 6 inches under water in order to float the boat off. I'm completely soaked by the time this awesome operation is over. I have to get the trailer close enough to the dock so I can step from the dock to the trailer fender, into the boat, start it up and power it off of the trailer. The same for putting it back on. It's not bad if there are two people involved. One in the car, the other in the boat. Some launch ramps do not allow powering onto a trailer. I just ignore that as it's the only way to get it securely onto the trailer. Lastly the winch is under water when in the retrieving mode, rendering it useless. So it's a stupid set up that I should have resolved long ago. I hardly used the boat this summer as I didn't feel like going through all of this aggravation. The idea of having the trailer modified had not occurred to me. Finding someone to do it?? Thank you for the great help and advice I've received on this site. I'd find a trailer shop or welding shop where they can look at it in person and give you a good opinion on what to do. They could pretty easily put a new longer tongue on it with a raised winch mount or do a drop axle and corresponding fender modifications or both. Can't tell how much fender to hull side clearance you have in the pictures, so the up close personal look at a shop would be good.

I would hesitate to lower the axle or use a dropped axle. There is no prop guard, I would worry that prop may find contact with the ground if the trailer is lowered. An extension could be done and you could convert it to a swivel or removable tongue at the same time. How far would you need to extend the tongue to get the car a little higher at the launch? 2 feet? ------------- |

The hitch extender would give you 12" and be very easy but the way you described how far you have to back in that might not be enough to make a difference. A buddy has a Pro Am Skier, the trailer it sits on has a silly long extension. Looks to be at least 3' more than necessary. I always wondered WHY it had that extension. I went the opposite way and shortened my extension as much as I could to help make the tight corner I use when putting my boat away and to help it fit in my garage. I just looked up Typical Boat Launch ramp specs. Typical they say is a 12-15% grade. That works out to 1.2 to 1.5" per foot drop. With that in mind, the 12" extension would gain a minimum of 1.2" clearance for your car. If your car is currently 6" under water you are looking at adding 5 foot of tongue length to get your car out of the water. That does not sound practical but what are your thoughts. I tow with a GMC Yukon most days and at stock height on the truck I sometimes have the exhaust in the water a little launching with my shortened trailer. At the driver door I can get in and out dry.

I'm pretty sure my trailer is short as it fits in a standard sized garage with enough clearance to close the garage door. Thats a nice feature. I think my best bet is to see about a new trailer. Even with an extender the launch and recover are still a challenge. With two people it works just fine but most of the time I put it in myself. From somewhere on the internet, here's a side view of a 17 ft Mustang on a CC #3 trailer for reference It's tall (it don't need no stinkin' prop guard unless you're 4 wheelin' with it  It's not very long It'll fit in a 24 foot deep garage The tire, fender, hull relationship looks a lot like yours. The tire is probably a 205/75/14 that would be about 26 inches tall  |

So........welding/trailer shop and a longer tongue with a raised up winch mount and get a swing up jack
It could be a removeable tongue or a swing away for easier storage

The CC LB (low boy) trailers were made for shallow ramps. CC used a drop axel and taller fenders to modify a standard trailer into a LB. I have one for my Tique and it works great. It does have a prop guard and it may have come standard on the LB's?

I would call the ramp I use as typical. Not too steep and not too shallow. With my 2wd F-150 it went from differential under water to diff out of the water. Water line is just below the rims as without the extension the entire wheel was almost submerged. Not a big difference but it makes me feel better. At the beach we camp on guys will launch with 4WD. Some use the 36" extension. Their trucks don't even get wet but it's a steeper drop off than the concrete ramp.

Many years ago I had a Chris Cratf 21 foot Holiday 1961. Never had a problem with that one. The tongue did pull out of the trailer and laid on the ground under it for storage. Had plenty of extra wiring. Maybe I can see about that idea? I bought the trailer new when I purchased the boat. That was in the early 80's.  Only Photo I could find of our old 1978 Trailer. Poor quality due to this photo hanging on a file cabinet for nearly 40 years. Had the new boat cover built this day in 1983. I think this was the Low Boy version of the Correct Craft trailer and it did have a prop guard.
The color scheme was invented by the crooks that stole this boat, they had it nearly 2 years before it was recovered and I bought it as is in 1982. At first I wanted to sand that off and get the Nautique decals back on, after a while I grew to really like it and it was quite the conversation starter. ------------- |

Mark, That is a low boy. I can tell from the tall fenders.
