During the off season I am planning on changing out the cutlass bearing and packing for drive shaft and rudder. What size packing will I need for each? I cannot get the rudder jam nut to break loose at all, any tips greatly appreciated. I highly doubt any of these repairs have ever been done to this boat. 88 BFN

A bit more information would be helpful:

Year, make, model etc.

JQ

When in doubt, use a bigger pipe wrench...

Are you using two wrenches..........one on the gland nut and one on the locking nut?

As far as the packing for both, you might get a variety of answers on what somebody used n their boat, but if you get two feet of 3/16 inch and 2 feet of 1/4 inch you'll have all the bases covered and have some leftover  Wink

Sometimes you catch both nuts with one wrench and you fight yourself?   Make sure they are each on the unique nut.  If still stuck add a pipe to your wrench, have someone rap the wrench the direction you need it to turn with a hammer while you pull.  The hit, creates more pressure and a vibration.  Both seem to help.
Put some penetrating oil on the threads above the nut and let it soak in.

If the going gets real tough, think about taking the gas tank out so that you have more working room
