Yesterday we took the Tweety out to the Classic boat get together . It hasn't been run since last year. When I first started it I noticed a clunk and heart attic start but then fired up so off we went. Ran fine about 20 minutes and parked at the dock for a few hours . When I started it again I noticed the same clunk and heart attic cranking. I know what a hydro lock sounds like at this I started looking I found my worst fear Water in the oil Sheeeeet . I know what you are thinking I thought the same for a second . Water in the oil right after winter . Did I screw up? Did it freeze? Then I thought about it all of my boats are inside stored no way it froze. Tore it apart and to my relief found a blown head gasket on number 8 cylinder  . This is a cheap easy fix will put it back together today. Look at the lower right where the water jacket is close to the cylinder . You can see the gasket is blown.

Can you put some arrows to the blown part of the gasket that makes it obvious this is the issue. I am not sure what I’m looking at and want to understand

If you have a micrometer you can measure the gasket thickness around all 4 cylinders.  If you find areas that are low the engine had an overheat that crushed the gasket.  It will blow out where it was crushed normally.
In the pictures you can see where it was leaking, there should be a nice circle showing the fire ring of the gasket impression all the way around all the cylinders indicating the seal was maintained all the way till tear down.   Yours does not show that. Fel Pro has information out there that instructs how to measure a gasket and map the results if needed.   If areas are .003-.007 smaller than other areas the gasket was crushed at some point.  They normally measure close to .039 thickness.

If your gasket was not a Marine gasket it may have just rusted out.

Yes tear down and clean on Sunday . I pulled the other head all looked good. Put it back together on Monday. I just received a full gasket set for the 85 I am working on so I had the new head gaskets so I only needed the intake and exhaust gaskets. Test drove it Tuesday I think it runs better than it ever has.
