My boat's rope rub rail has been replaced with an aftermarket vinyl insert style rail. This insert pops out at the mere suggestion of a dock pole rubbing against it or a swimmer sliding into the water over a gunwale, leaving things looking like this:

I did notice that the ends of the rub rail do not have a/an end cap(s) fitted:

I'm thinking that the lack of end cap means the insert is not pulled tight enough into the rail, which results in the insert popping out so easily. Am I on the right track with my thinking? Will removing the insert, heating it up, stretching it tight around the boat when re-inserting and then fitting an end cap to keep it tensioned perhaps solve my problem? Or am I on the wrong track here?
