I know a lot of you like pictures, so I thought I would share my progress so far. I'm sure anyone that has jumped into wet sanding the entire boat has questions like is this really worth it? Am I going to have anything to look at when I'm done? When the h*ll will my arms quit hurting? I guess when you get a little closer & can see that shine, it makes it all worth it. I compounded half of the front deck last night & there it was, a bright red boat.
The first two pics are when I brought it home from Indy. The second two are with a newly rebuilt trailer under it getting ready to take over my wifes parking spot in the garage. The third are with the 320 grit sanding done on the hull. The last one is the deck with 1000 grit sanding & one round of compound done. Can't wait till it's done & start on the interior.

Can't see the pix, I'm sure its very nice; consider using a wet DA, a little soap in the bucket, with 400 then 600, keep the pad wet, keep dunking, the buffing later will then go much faster. With fewer microscratches, the shine will be much more durable.

GottaSki- what do you mean "consider using a wet DA"??
I am going to get mine to shine this winter. Maybe replace the pin striping and lettering. I will probably need to wet sand the entire boat also.
BTW- How many beers does this project require??

Alot- but its worth it. You may not need to wetsand, unless the color is really faded or seriously oxidized. Compound and polish with a good rotary will bring back the shine pretty quick. I wetsanded mine because the deck had yellowed and I wanted to match the bright white that appeared when I removed some original stickers. Id say I spent a good 40 hrs wetsanding and buffing the deck.
Skicat, the boat is really taking shape. I love the early Skiers- never seen one in red before. I cant wait to see it shining- keep posting pics!

Tim,
A rotary toll won't leave little swirl marks on the gel? Do you put rubbing compound on the rotary attachment? We'll hook up in the spring so I can get all your steps down perfectly.
No luck on finding that '88 in NH, Tim. We'll keep our eyes open in case it pops up again.

re:, wet sanding with a 'D'ual 'A'ction pnumatic sander. Just dunk it in a soapy bucket every minute or so. Soap cuts the surface tension so the surface stays wet.
Whoops, I read the 320 and missed the 1000.
I think 320 removes too much gel and leaves too deep a scratches , especially for dark colors.

TRB- Look at that shine!
I am almost certain I will need to wet sand, the boat has quite a few dock scratches and I will need to blend in a coulple dings i am going to repair with gelcoat repair paste. I will have to take some pics and post them...
40 hrs on the deck or the whole boat?
Lets do some figuring...
40 hrs @ 3.5 beers per hour...
40*3.5= 140 beers
140/24= 5.83
I am going to need 6 cases of beer!

Skicat,
I wet sanded my 81 last February, Don't worry the soreness will be gone by April. when it's time to ski. It's a lot of work but worth it.
Be careful with that 320 it can remove gel real fast.
That trailer ended up under Paul's cla$$ic didn't it? Those fenders look familar.

Ken, the rotary is pretty aggressive- but thats the point. The trick is using progressively finer products to smooth the surface. I wetsanded with 320, 400, 600 and 1000 (2x) grit. I compounded with 3M super duty compound (2x), then microfinishing compound, then Finesse-it II polish (2x). I finished off with glaze and wax, both by hand. Next time Ill probably skip the glaze.
I used specific pads for each product, wool being the most aggressive. Ill have to show you in the spring.
Let me know if you catch wind of that '88.
Skicat, sorry for the threadjack- looking good!

Randy, I only did the deck. Luckily, the side gel on my boat doesnt need much work- Ill compound and polish it in the spring, but no wetsanding will be necessary (thank god). I would try wetsanding the areas that need it first and see how they look compared to the surrounding gel. Dont do the whole boat unless it really needs it. Always start with finer grits to determine how aggressive you need to be.

skicat, Lookin' good!
I have always wet sand by hand using a rubber block... It helps keep eveything
"straight".. One thing I like to use for the water is a spray bottle.. I stole a little one from my daughter (I think she used it for her hair?)
Works great for controlling where/how much water you apply.... also, like was mentioned before ... use a little dish soap..
Keep those pics coming!

Man that looks fanastic Skicat !!! Must feel pretty good !!!
Question for anyone: what's the best product for filling in deep scratches or chips? I've read here anything from Bondo to Gel paste??
I'm going to repaint anyway, so color isn't an issue for me...
Hopefully this helps Skicat as well..
Thanks

Gel paste is good. If your going to paint, then Marine Tex would be a good choice, but a little harder to sand. Also,Evercoat makes this purple, fibergla$$ reinforced stuff, that comes in a big toothpaste looking dispenser that actually works great. This stuff would be an even better choice.

skicat,
fantastic job...my arms are sore just looking at it. Follow up question to the above discussion. My boat, painted, just off-white, has a few nicks around the rub rail. Anything I can fill those in with when I don't intend to paint again? Any way to match color on patching stuff and polishing out the joints between the patch and the original? Also some gelcoat cracking on the engine cover, not to deep, that I wouldn't mind filling in somehow.

75,
I am going to try Minicraft in Florida for my gel paste. There are a lot of threads on here about the repair. I don't know how that would work with paint though. With the gelcoat you can sand it all smooth, but the paint would be a different story. Maybe someone else can help you out with that.
Thanks all for the words of encouragement on the boat. All I get around here is grief for taking up the garage!!

If you just want to fill those areas and do nothing else,I would go with a gelcoat patching kit. You can mix this stuff up to make any color. Cost is around $20.00

Skicat, its looking great!
Are you planning on sending Minicraft a chip of your gel so they can custom match it, or are you using a color wheel? Or are you going to match it yourself like Scott mentioned?
Id love to have them match it for me, but Im afraid of taking a hole saw to my boat!

How do you smooth that out...blend it into the existing hull paint/fibergla$$? Can't really sand it with paint can you?

Smooth it out with a plastic trowel. If you want to patch the paint too, then use that Evercoat stuff for your repairs, then blend in the paint after the repairs are finished.
I thought you said you didn't want to paint again. That's why I suggested the gel.

TRB,BKH,
I have been looking at all of the skiers I can find & the only original looking stripe I see is the one like Reid Pinkham's skier in the diaries section. I am thinking of a stripe like this in white (only the one around the hull, not the deck). The interior will be white with red piping. I think the carpet was the red/black astro turf, so that is what I was considering for the interior. Here is the motor. I haven't seen many of these chryslers.

I've learned from more experienced gel repair experts, after filling vertical surfaces, apply masking tape right over the new gel to keep it from drooping while it hardens. Working the gel for too long is always regretable.
Wet sand flat with 400 before it fully hardens, then wet 600 after it fully cures. Resist the tempatation to machine buff for a few days.
Ambient temperature is critical to good cure, as well as surface prep.

BKH, you may know this but the Skier shared the 16'5" hull with the '71+ Mustang (16). The same hull was used when the Skier became the Ski Tique. There was actually one at the GL Reunion:
Skicat, Im a big fan of keeping things original, but the stripe on this '68 Mustang looks pretty good. I bet it would look equally nice on your red machine.

your a little off there that's a 73 SN with a fuel injected motor with a custom stripe that he has owner for about 20yrs. That's Mojo's and 62 wood's in the background along with rob's to the rght and the demo boat to the left. That boat is stang's buddy Steve, think that was his name, only one that could really keep up with mine.

Correct Mojo, Going from memory only, I think that white boat in the first pic is Pat Allens.
The other boat Chris is talking about was Stangs buddy Brian with the fuel injected 318. I think it was a 73 ski. Joel(M3fan) and I got to drive that one down at Shelbyville, it's a screamer.

You guys finaly got it narrowed down . That is my 72 skier with a 220 conqerer crusader 302. The stripe on the side is still original it is actualy 2 in. vinyl tape . It does have the original wind shield. Kieth told me that it was the last boat style to use that kind of wind shield. These boats are bare bones made for the recreational skier. They dont have a speedo or horn and they also didnt come with carpet.

Skicat's revived finish still has me reelin'. When completed it might be the hottest boat on this site.
I attach similar type photos of Marshall Morgan's 70 Mustang (see diaries), which when purchased, looked just like 'cats. We drove from NC to Mich after he bought it off ebay, and after he pursuaded the guy to pull it from auction by paying him 90% up front thru PayPal. Turns out the posted pict was about 10 yrs old and the boat had faded/oxidized terribly since. Well Marshall wanted to back out, but I reminded him he already paid the guy, and deal was a deal, although there was a little misrep here. So we explained to the guy that the picts really didn't reflect this deterioration; he agreed and settled on a lower price. I figured we might be able to bring the finish back a bit, and if not Marshall could sell it and recoup his money. "I" ended up doing the several days of sanding and heavy 3M compounding and it was like magic before my eyes. Once I started I couldn't stop. It was the nicest 36 year-old finish I'd ever seen perhaps until now. So, Marshall got back to my place and wet his pants when he saw it. I left the port-side transom for him to do so he'd further appreciate the transformation. Guess who ended up doing it?
I've only seen a couple of old hulls that couldn't be brought back finish-wise. You can make any of them shine again, no question about it. But the original color may not come thru. On the old yellow 71 SN that I've partnered with a friend to restore, I sanded/compounded all the way thru the gelcoat in an inconspicuous area without getting the original bright yellow back. I've seen several other of those yellows that turned to a shiny Guldens. And then there's the question of whether it's not just cheaper and better looking just to paint them when they're really bad, and esp if there's body work to do.
Anyway, great job Skicat! I've got a source for the original style rub rail if you need it. <$200 total.

Are you sure that 71 is supposed to be yellow? I had a 71 that everyone called pee green. I have not seen very may of those, but yours looks just like it. I sold it to a friend of mine & he said yours was the same color. Odd color, but looked great!
Yes I do need the rub rail. Someone put a newer style on it. All I know about the original is it was the flat rounded face aluminum style. What size was it, did it have a small return on the bottom? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks for all of the other encouragement. Sometimes you need that to keep all of the projects going.

Skicat, I know the color you're talking about. I know of 2 1971 Skiers that are "pea" green, and youre right- its not far from mustard yellow. My guess is that Reid's familiar with that color too- this is an awful pic of one of those Skiers from NC.

Greg, I know what you're saying about the color. I thought it was a completely different color as well until we pulled off hdwe from the decks and esp the speedo mounting plate. It was as bright a yellow as you could imagine (see picts). Along the gunnel/top deck I was able to bring some of it back nicely but once I found there was no hope for the transom I pa$$ed and we decided to have it painted, plus it had lots of nicks and gouges.
As for the rub rail, try this site and page. http://www.tacomarine.com/cat--Aluminum-Rub-Rail--cat2_aluminum_rr.html
This is the exact replacement if you're looking for the anodized alum. The model you want is A11-0152. You can buy this thru West Marine, but you'll need to give them this part number as I don't think you'll find it in their catalog. It comes in 12' and 6' strips, and I think I normally used 3-12s and a 6, with about 3 feet left over. Or if you're gonna be up in Charlotte some time soon, I bought a bunch of it and can sell you some. It's a pain to try and ship.

Greg,
If you come on up soon, we can take a ride, as otherwise I'll be winterizing before it freezes. The 63 Cla$$ic is still hanging, but several others are close by the ramp in the yard and easy to launch. If you can break away during the week I can sneak out, or come on up on a weekend. Well finally getting around to some work on the skier. Here it is ready to put back together. Today I went to West marine & purchased new wiring, hoses, vent hose, etc to start putting it back together. TIP-don't make the mistake of taking your wife with you to buy this stuff. It adds up really fast & she knows how much you are actually spending on the boat! I didn't have to replace the stringers, but I did clean up the glass & reglass them over good. They are not up to Skibums standards for looks, but they should do the job. Still on a bilgekote high. Man that stuff is mighty strong!

Fill us in Greg- are you refoaming? What kind of floor?
I assume carpet will be going in- are you sticking with the red theme? How about the vents?
Off topic, but you dont happen to know where I can find a period-correct steering wheel like this one, do you?

There was no foam when I took out the floor. It was all in pretty good shape, so I am going back the same way. No foam & plywood floor coated with resin & glassed to the hull. As of now I am going with red carpet, White seats with red piping. The vents were red before, but I can't save them without repainting, so I am between red & white on those. Mine has the same steering wheel as the one in the picture, but I don't know where there would be one. If I see one, I will let you know.

Thats surprising- any idea if the stringers had ever been redone? I thought CC put foam in all their boats starting in the mid-60's.
Sounds like you have a good plan- I cant wait to see the final results. Id go with white on the vents, by the way.

The stringers had some cloth added to them. As bad a job as it was, I think it might have been enough to keep off the water. The foam might have been removed at that time? Up under the bow it does have foam, but that is all. Not a lot of room for foam under the floor in these little boats so I am leaving it out.

Here are a few updates on the skier. I hope to get it out of the garage this weekend & I can take some better pics then. Not much room with all the junk around it. The front scoop is a little crooked, but it is just sitting up there. It was still a little sticky with the fresh paint. I added the rear decals in hopes of getting some color to it. (I know Pete, not original like the white scoops) The scoops were in bad shape, so I had to rebuild them. I didn't figure I could match the red as well as just doing the white. There will be a lot of red when it is done. At least now it is putting stuff back on instead of tearing up. Maybe someday I will finish!
Trailer is not too long, boat is just moved forward. Makes it easier getting aroud the boat in the tight garage.

Greg, the boat looks great! I love the white scoops- I have the same look going on my green Skier (which Ive found is a '72). You dont have metal emblems to put on the side? Any plans for a white water line stripe? You gotta take those rubber flappers off!
Question- is your rope clearance bar (the triangle piece) stright up and down when viewed from the side? Mine has a backward cant to it- Im not sure if its supposed to be like that or if its bent.

Tim , My boat didnt have metalemblems on the side . They were black with white letters . My rope bar is also tilted to the back .

Pat, good to know about the rope bar- thanks! I assume yours is tubular just like Skicat's? Mine is and I was worried it wasnt original- I remember our '68 being rounded flat stock.
If Im not mistaken, the metal emblems were used on at least some (if not all) '71's. Thats what we're putting on the yellow/red Skier eventually since I have a set. My green '72 has the white and black plastic emblems.

Tim,
My rope bar is round alum. tubing. I will have to look if it tilts back, but there is not much room between it & the stern light pole. I did have to work on the flat ends where it mounts to the boat since they were bent a little. I don't know if it is the original or not, but it looks it to me. No metal emblems for this one. They are pretty hard to come by. It had the plastic ones when I got it, so I just got some new ones from Whitelake.

I know how you feel Reid. You get to see pics of a great looking boat that has been started on & then it sort of just falls off the planet for a while. Now where are the updated pics of that yellow Nautique I like so well? I guess you are going to get out of it by saying someone else is doing it for you right!!

About damn time we got an update, Greg... but it looks terrific! Im going to forward this thread to Nick to inspire him to get back to his Skier. Im guessing thats a #3 trailer judging by how close the bunks are to the edge? Get us some interior/floor shots... Im curious how you finished the floor. Carpet? Vinyl?

I didn't take any of the interior since there is nothing really there. I did go with gray carpet though. I won't use the word restore (To keep things legit with Pete), but save from the junk pile & use it is more like it.

Ha, you dont know the meaning of "saved from the landfill" until youve seen our junk Skier, Greg. Did I mention that the floors had been replaced by a previous owner- with particle board? We're deviating from original a bit as well... our carpet will be red.
Tom, cool boat- whats the story? It looks like a Martinique to me- and its not yellow, its "Inca Gold". Reid's is bright yellow.

Tim,
Mine wasn't much better than particle board. I wanted to do red, but the rest of my family said it would be too much red. I still disagree, but the gray looks ok too.

Tim,I dont want to hijack Cats thread. It is supposedly a 71 SN with updated graphics and possibly a newer windshield.Thats what I was told.
Its probably one of those deals to good to be true.
-------------
|
Posted By: TRBenj
Date Posted: March-29-2010 at 5:20pm
Did I mention that the particle board only had one layer of glass (on the top- none on the bottom)? The carpet was the only thing holding it together!
Too much red... is that possible? What color are you doing for the seats? I think we're doing cream (to match the deck) with red pinstriping.
Tom, Id love to hear/see more about that boat. Youre probably right about it being a SN- though a shot of the dash would confirm. Definitely a Martinique windshield. Not a fan of the graphics they added, but the rest is pretty sweet. It looks clean!

Greg, what an amazing job on bringing that boat back! It looks great.
Tim, that is a depressing picture. That's about how our Barracuda looked. It's got the same weird inlet for the raw water. Why do you suppose they did that?

Bruce, youre telling me! Its stripped down to the bare hull now- should be ready for stringersin the spring. We HAVE to get the thing in the water this year. I should shoot you an email about that trailer, by the way.
Both of my Skiers have the dual water inlets. The only thing I can figure is that the factory wanted to make sure the engine would get enough water... they must not have trusted the RWP that much!
-------------
|
Posted By: WakeSlayer
Date Posted: March-29-2010 at 6:08pm
A possibile explanation on the water inlets may be that it is a carry over from the late 60's SN's and the dual impeller set up like my 318 has. Just a thought.
