We just bought a 1964 Correct Craft Tournament Skier that we plan to restore.  I’m hoping I can get some information on this boat.  I have several questions.  We were told it was originally ordered without an engine from the factory and a 327 Corvette (3 Deuces) engine was put in by the original owner, whose name is inlaid on the speedometer.  Steering is on the left hand side with a floor gas pedal.  We have not been able to find any Tournament Skiers exactly like this on the Internet.  Thanks in advance for any information for this boat.

I'd say that the engine was converted to marine with a Lehman Econ-o- Power conversion kit, mostly because I can read Econ-o-Power on the exhaust manifold Wink.

Lehman sold a good number of those kits in the 50's, 60's and 70's for a variety of engines.

A Google search for Lehman Econ-o-Power will give you some reading.

That is pretty cool stuff!  Good looking boat and engine.  Looks like a fun project for sure.

Are those marine air cleaners too with spark covers. You gotta restore that engine

Welcome to CCF. Beautiful boat!  It is incredibly intact and not molested! Even the wing vents are there! PM Art Cozier.   He may be able to provide you with information about it.  Please post more photos of it.  There are often stories that go along with old Correct Crafts, but yours may well be true. Besides being an unusual LH drive, it's interesting that it does not have a bulkhead with a bench seat.

Patti, that is quite a find, congrats!  I agree with Bruce, surprised at the seating.  The engine pics put a smile on my face, I'd do whatever is needed to get that in running shape.

Thanks for that info as we know very little about this boat. I'll check that out.  I was trying to find out why the steering was on the left as well.  And I still haven't found a boat that exactly matches this on the Internet.  Found Atoms and Compacts, but not a Tournament Skier.  We are having the engine checked by a mechanic right now.

I have not seen many TS. I remember 2 on my lake back in the day. There have been a few in the Diaries over the years and a couple on Facebook recently. Yours is the only left hand drive TS I've seen.  LH boats were unusual back then.  Correct Craft did make some and they typically were standard rotation.  Unfortunately, the reference section and diaries photos got wiped out a few years ago, so there are few photos on CCF.  I have some reference materials. I'll see if I have any for the TS.

Yours has the deluxe windshield. The photo on FB you posted shows the steering wheel, which is the same wheel they offered on the Classic and Atom Skier Deluxe. It must have been an upgrade as well. I believe it is a Plymouth Valient wheel.

Thanks so much for the two Correct Craft brochures!!!   And thanks for the info on the steering wheel.  Every piece of information helps as we try to learn about this boat.  I still haven't found another on the Internet just like it and wonder how many might still exist?

As far as what you called the "marine air cleaners with spark covers", I don't know and no one I have asked so far knows.

In marine applications you don't really need an air cleaner element to filter air like in a car, but the housing needs a metal screen that is a spark arrestor for safety.  As you get into the project there are several areas you'll want to look at for safety, the risk of fire on a 60's era boat with basically automobile components was fairly high since you have the enclosed space below the doghouse and deck for fumes to accumulate.  Things like an exhaust blower, marine fuel pump, marine starter, are examples of upgrades you can do.

Part of the excitement of your project for many of us here is things like those spark arrestors, exhaust tips, etc. that some of us haven't seen before.

Art should be able to give you a rough idea of how many of those were built, it will be a low number for a single year.  Then the question of how many still exist is one that we could only guess at.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the number that are all original like yours is very small, maybe several dozen but I'm just wild ass guessing.  The number with port side helm and that engine?  My guess would be ... ONE.  Curious if others here will agree.

There's only one in the Diaries.  I remember someone posting a really rough white one in the forums some years ago.  I've seen 3 on FB recently including this one.  That's all I can think of.  There's not many of them left and probably never as many built as Compacts and Atoms.  This one is by far the most original and not molested one I have seen.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is the only LH one. Not many Correct Crafts on my list, but I would have been interested in that one.

Those exhaust tips are actually an aftermarket attempt at muffling, might even be Salisbury. Maybe the manufacturer name is molded into them.

Boat could be stunning when finished...
As for safety, I was able to add 2 modern blowers and hoses similar in layout to a 90's-era Nautique.(to my '64 Dunphy).  You'd never know they were there. Also tapped in a bilge pump float switch. There are also discreet Gas Fume detector alarms to help mitigate that risk.

Adding blowers and such is a good idea. But if you have an older boat without modern safety features like marine carbs or blowers, you should do what the manufacturer suggested back in the day which is to raise the motor box frequently and sniff for gas fumes.  That should be done at least every morning and after re fueling.

Hard to see on my phone
But if I enlarge carb, I think I see very fine horizontal lines in chrome covers
Might have ‘spark arrestor inserts’

This is SO cool Patti. Have you guys discovered the serial number tag yet? That will help Art out. I think folks say those tags are generally on the port stringer, just aft of aft engine mount, or in that general area....

Thanks for the heads up on safety with these older wooden boats.  We have been tournament skiers for 40 years but have no experience with these older wooden boats.  This boat has 3 fire extinguishers and I'm now learning why.

This boat was likely "one of a kind" when it was new, but almost certainly is today.

It's great to see three wooden Correct Craft boat projects in the recent forum topics.

Yes!  And the steering wheel is positively a Valiant.  Is the horn part of the steering wheel as in a car?  There is no horn button. The Speedometer shows the original owner's name (Mel Cox) and here's the hour meter. the hour meter.  The man we bought it from got it from the original owner's son, who is now in his mid-80's.

That is a voltage regulator. I wonder if it was OEM for that engine or if it was added as an aftermarket item.

Was wondering if the motorbox lid? was added because of the Corvette 3 Deuces engine?  Or was this stock on all TS's?

This is unbelievable, the interior looks completely intact and not a rip in it! Incredible.

So, in-as-much as this motor may have been a one-off, the motor box (affectionaly aka 'dog-house') would have been modified with that flap for the carbs, I would imagine.

Receptacle for pylon at front of motor box. Nice.

So, Patti, does your seller have the contact info for Mel Cox's son? It would be interesting to talk with him, as he more than likely grew up on that boat.

What was the usage and storage history from who you bought it from? Clearly used sparingly over the decades. When last in the water?

Thanks,

Mark

Patti, in the last photo there appears to be a rectangular something below the rear seat cushion on the face of the rear seat frame. Curious as to what that is...?

Yes, the seller does have the contact info for the original owner's son, and we will definitely try to arrange a meeting to talk to him.  It will be interesting to find out the details of this boat - as you said.  How it was stored?  Was it used in tournaments, etc?  This is how the boat was stored when my nephew found it, but I don't believe it was stored like this for all those decades!

Patti that was a Sweet Find! I picked up a 1962? correct craft starflite about a month ago. I wish it was as in as good of condition as your boat appears to be. I found this site also after my purchase and it's a great source. I made a donation to help keep these kinds of sites going. Also, if you aren't already a member i would suggest joining the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS) in your area. That is another way to connect with people that have the same passion restoring and maintaining classic boats such as yours. Was the boat advertised for sale or your nephew just stumble across it? If you took it to an ACBS boat show "as is" it would draw a crowd. People love barn finds whether it be cars or boats. Good Luck with your new project.

I can't enlarge the photo, but thought those were marine spark arrestors?  I'm not familiar with that set up, although don't think or know that GM ever put tripples on a 327.

Like Riley said, they're flame arrestors............if you google "vintage flame arrestors" and go to images you can find numerous different examples,

They were used on boats and cars too. Wink

Like newer style arrestors they have multiple layers of screen

Late to the party on this Post but what an awesome find. Cool boat for sure and thanks for posting all the pics and info Patti. Welcome to CCFan!!! Hug

Saw all the comments about reaching out to Art so I Tommy Topped you all and gave him a call this morning about this post. Tongue He hasn't been on the site in awhile so that's why there hasn't been any response from him. He said thanks for info and he'll check it out to see what all the rave is about. 64 was before his time at CC but Art will offer up what info he does know.

I'm really curious about that regulator/polarizer, not something I've ever seen before.  I'll do some digging later today.

I'm also curious what kind of power that 327 put out.

The regulator/polarizer in the picture is a Blue Streak aftermarket unit that was used with a generator. When alternators came along you didn't have to worry about "polarizing".

The button made it easier than doing it with a separate piece of wire.

The base 327 in '64 was 250 h.p. at 4400 rpm. Similar to the venerable Ford 351W a few years later. No accounting for the cool carbs....

I'm told that the owner who put in this engine was also a drag racer (cars), so apparently speed and power was what he was interested in.  My brother also discovered a friend of his who also drag raced and boated with him.  He is 92 years old now.

It's probably good for most everyone that you don't own CC.

Why would CC as the story goes, want a boat that they sold without an engine and "isn't exactly a well preserved original".

There are probably plenty of people who would like to own it though, maybe the resto mod type Wink

I'm with Daryn, that boat would look great at headquarters.  Of every 1000 people that saw the boat there would be maybe 1 that noticed the non-standard engine, everyone else (including me) would be salivating as they looked at a beautiful classic with a really cool engine package.
